Do you want to inspire a love of learning in children? To see the lightbulb moment where it all 'clicks', and know you helped make it happen? Get ready to learn how to become a teacher. You'll gain the academic expertise as well as the core teaching skills to become a confident, inclusive, and creative educator who believes in every child's potential.
This primary education degree provides the perfect fast-track teacher training route with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Combining academic study with interactive seminars and experiential learning, you'll build strong subject knowledge across the curriculum. You'll choose from one of two age pathways:
- 3-7 years (Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1) or
- 5-11 years (Key Stage 1 and 2)
With school placements every year, you'll start shaping your teacher identity from day one. You'll graduate as a reflective, research-informed educator, equipped with the professional skills to inspire, challenge, and support young learners as they discover the world around them.
As part of this primary education course, you'll:

From student to confident teacher
Practice-based classroom placements - across our network of over 150 partner schools in West Yorkshire - are built into every year of the course. Each year, you'll complete a minimum of eight weeks on placement (120 days across the course). You'll develop core teaching skills, build your confidence, and grow a strong professional identity, fully supported by expert tutors and in-school mentors as you work towards achieving QTS. Not only will you learn how to become a teacher, you'll actually experience teaching in real classrooms before you graduate.
Fast-track your teaching career
This primary education degree enables you to become a primary teacher with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in just three years. When you graduate, you'll be ready to step straight into the classroom as an Early Career Teacher (ECT). Non-QTS courses typically require additional study after your first degree to become a qualified teacher.
Go beyond the classroom
As well as studying in our newly refurbished Carnegie School of Education building, you'll also explore teaching contexts outside of traditional education settings. In your first year, you can complete Forest School training, making the most of our green campus and outdoor learning spaces. As you progress, you'll tailor your studies through modules that reflect your chosen age pathway and prepare you for your Early Career Teacher (ECT) years.

There are no formal written exams on this course. Instead, you'll complete creative, coursework-based assignments such as group podcasts, individual presentations, and lively debates, mirroring real teaching practice and building your confidence in communication, planning, and reflection.

Satisfactory enhanced criminal history checks will be required by all applicants prior to acceptance on the course, (processed through the University only). The University is unable to accept DBS checks obtained through another institution (this includes those registered with the DBS Update Service); the checks undertaken by the University are appropriate to the course of study and relevant regulated activity placements. For important information on the UK Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check requirements please refer to the Guidance on DBS and Additional Checks.
Self Declaration Check
You will be asked to complete this online form as part of the DBS check process. You will be asked to identify on the self-declaration form if you have any cautions/convictions that would not be filtered out on a DBS certificate. Please refer to the following website for guidance on filtering. The form will also ask if you have resided outside of the UK after the age of 16, to establish if an Overseas Police Record check may be required.
Overseas Police Checks/Letter of Good Conduct
The DBS in the UK is currently not able to conduct overseas criminal record checks. International applicants; those without British Citizenship and British Citizens with a significant period of overseas residency of 12 months or more after the age of 16; therefore, require a criminal records check or certificate of good conduct from their home/overseas country(ies) prior to entry on to the course. A UK DBS check will also be required prior to enrolment; the DBS team will send you guidance on how to apply following your offer of a place. The application process and timeframes for Overseas Police checks can differ from country to country and so it is recommended that you start the process as soon as possible after you have been made a conditional/Unconditional offer to ensure you have enough lead in time to obtain the check prior to enrolment. Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to the specialist learning and study-skill resources. You’ll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.
Modules, teaching and learning

What you'll learn
Develop your knowledge and understanding of language, communication, and literacy teaching in primary schools through a combination of taught sessions and directed study. You'll explore effective approaches to early English education, with particular emphasis on early reading and systematic synthetic phonics. By the end of the module, you'll be able to apply core knowledge of grammar, punctuation, and spelling in your own writing, enabling you to communicate clearly and appropriately for your audience.
Build your knowledge of a range of pedagogical approaches for teaching and learning in early mathematics. In this module, you'll explore how young children develop mathematical skills and concepts, with reference to effective pedagogy and reflective practice. You'll then be able to identify and apply appropriate strategies to assess children’s mathematical understanding and progress.
Explore the 3-11 curriculum and deepen your understanding of the rationale behind each curriculum area. If you're training on the 3-7 pathway, you'll focus on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) areas of learning. If you're on the 5-11 pathway, you'll consider the National Curriculum at Key Stages 1 and 2, including religious education. You'll enhance both your subject knowledge and pedagogical understanding to support high-quality teaching across the curriculum.
This module supports and reflects on your journey to becoming a student teacher. Drawing on academic literature, we'll explore your personal learning journey and the factors that have shaped it. You'll consider how education policy has influenced both your own experiences and those of school pupils. Finally, you'll bring together your understanding across personal, professional, and policy contexts, demonstrating your ability to reflect through a creative presentation.
This module prepares you for professional practice. Through a series of taught sessions, you'll develop the core skills needed by beginning teachers to plan, teach, and assess learning in the primary classroom. By reflecting on your practice, you'll start to build a strong sense of professional identity and explore effective behaviour for learning strategies. On completion, you'll be able to apply planning practices confidently to English and mathematics in the primary classroom.
What you'll learn
This module provides subject-specific teaching across a cluster of STEM-related subjects. You'll take part in dedicated lectures and seminars for mathematics, science, PE, geography, computing, and design and technology, supported by a broader lecture programme. During your placement opportunities, you'll be encouraged to teach across these subjects, applying your theoretical and practice-informed understanding in inclusive and creative ways.
This module provides teaching across a cluster of arts-related subjects. You'll attend subject-specific lectures and seminars in English, history, religious education, primary foreign languages, art, music, drama, and personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education. These seminars are supported by a broader lecture programme. Working with visiting pupils, you'll have the opportunity to plan and deliver a 'Raising Aspirations' Day. You'll also be encouraged to teach each of these subjects during placement opportunities, applying your theoretical and practice-informed understanding in inclusive and creative ways.
This module supports you on your journey to becoming an inclusive practitioner. You'll explore your developing understanding of inclusive practice within the current education policy context and critically examine your own pedagogical approaches. With support, you'll begin to articulate a personal standpoint on key issues relating to inclusion. By the end of the module, you'll have developed a strong pedagogical foundation and the skills to implement adaptive teaching strategies.
This module provides the opportunity to develop your school-based practice and deepen your knowledge and understanding of teaching. You'll explore and reflect on your emerging teacher identity, with a focus on inclusive practice and adaptive teaching approaches. Your learning will enable you to respond to the needs of a diverse range of learners, through thoughtful, flexible teaching.
What you'll learn
Building on the subject knowledge gained in years 1 and 2, this module deepens your understanding of key issues related to teaching in the primary classroom. It emphasises the central role of English and mathematics within the primary curriculum, while also exploring the broader foundation subjects. You'll learn to select, gather, evaluate, and organise data from a wide range of primary and secondary sources. Through this process, you'll demonstrate a strong grasp of subject content, curriculum design, and pedagogical approaches relevant to your chosen age phase.
This module builds on the knowledge and skills you've developed throughout your degree. You'll explore a specific approach to delivering learning in the primary classroom, with a focus on your chosen elective area. Working collaboratively, your group will produce a short film that demonstrates the positive impact of effective teaching on children's learning within your selected area of focus. Drawing on the diverse expertise within your group, you'll develop your ability to collaborate professionally while also refining your individual interests. The module ultimately aims to support you in inspiring positive engagement and meaningful learning experiences for children.
Develop your understanding of education and strengthen your critical analysis skills through the design and implementation of a small-scale research study in a subject area of your choice. During this module, you'll critically evaluate theory, research, policy, and practice relevant to your chosen focus. You'll also learn to collect, review, and analyse data, either by reflecting on your own practice or by conducting a literature review.
Enhance your classroom practice and deepen your understanding of teaching, including how your progress is assessed against the Teachers' Standards. This module provides a comprehensive grounding in subject knowledge, curriculum design, and pedagogical approaches. As you advance, you'll develop the ability to analyse, interpret, and present data related to your chosen focus. By the end of the module, you'll demonstrate a strong understanding of learner diversity and the complexities of the education process.

In many cases, costs associated with your course will be included in your course fee. However, in some cases there are ‘essential’ additional costs (those that you will be required to meet in addition to your course fee), and/or ‘optional’ additional costs (costs that are not required, but that you might choose to pay). We have included those essential or optional additional costs that relate to your course, below.
Essential Costs
- Local school, art gallery and relevant teacher training visits. During the school visits, you'll observe and take part in good primary teaching practice. These visits are local and are accessible by public transport. You'll need to make your own arrangements and pay for your own travel / transport to these sites.
- Placement travel costs. You'll need to cover the costs to travel to and from unpaid work placements, which will be for a minimum of 28 weeks across 3 years. You'll be kept as close as possible to your term-time address. Placements will need to meet the standards of the Course Teaching Partnership.
- Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and/or occupational health (OH) check. The cost of these checks is covered by your course fee, but you'll need to pay for your ID documents to be verified (£12.80 as of August 2025). Your DBS check is valid for the duration of your course. New checks are only required if you have a break in your studies outside of the normal holiday periods. If you misplace your certificate during your studies, you'll be charged £49.50 for a new certificate.
Other study-related expenses to consider: materials that you will need to complete your course such as books (whilst the library provides access to readings recommended for your modules, you may wish to purchase your own copies of some books); you can also make suggestions for books to be added to Library stock; placement costs (these may include travel expenses and living costs); student visas (international students only); printing, photocopying and stationery (you may need to pay for multiple copies of your dissertation or final project to be printed and bound); events associated with your course such as field trips; study abroad opportunities (travel costs and accommodation, visas and immunisations). Other costs could include academic conferences (travel costs) and professional-body membership (where applicable). The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.
As well as your mobile phone, you will also need access to a desktop computer and/or laptop to complete assignments and access university online services such as MyBeckett, your virtual learning environment. You can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located in the libraries.

The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.
As well as your mobile phone, you will also need access to a desktop computer and/or laptop to complete assignments and access university online services such as MyBeckett, your virtual learning environment. You can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located in the libraries.
This list is not exhaustive, costs are approximate and will vary depending on the choices you make during your course. Any rental, travel or living costs are also in addition to your course fees. If you choose to study via distance learning, you may not be able to access all of the facilities listed if you are not able to visit us on campus.

Our new home
Our new home in Caedmon Hall features a university seminar classroom which combines a traditional lecture theatre with more intimate tutorial scenarios, to accommodate flexible teaching methods. It also has communal social and study areas, brand new conferencing facilities and a number of flexible high-spec teaching and learning areas. Including the following bespoke spaces:
- Science Laboratory - complete with the latest state-of-the-art equipment
- Art and Design room - bespoke facilities designed to maximise the range of possible activities
- VR/Augmented Reality Lab - state-of-the-art specialist area for the practice, development and delivery of immersive technology in education
- Early Years Room - carefully designed for early years teaching
- Primary Maths Space - designed to be flexible and support the delivery of high-quality teaching and learning
