As part of this course, you'll:

  • Gain a qualification accredited by the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP). This is just the first step in your journey to becoming a fully qualified counsellor or psychotherapist
  • Consider a wide range of psychological theories of counselling. This is designed to help you see the Relational Approach in context
  • Be trained to deliver therapy using online platforms, including video conferencing, and over the phone

Upon successful completion of our DipHE, you can progress straight onto our BSc (Hons) Therapeutic Counselling (Top-Up).

Professional recognition
This course is accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). As a graduate, you’ll be able to register as a member and join the BACP register for counsellors and psychotherapists. Additionally, you’ll be able to work towards achieving accredited status with the BACP.

Personal development
You’ll get the opportunity to integrate theory and practice through group and individual supervision. This will help you to continue your own personal development. During your studies, you’ll be given all the help you need to find a suitable work placement.

Live counselling
You’ll have client contact for two, one-hour sessions per week, for a total of 100 hours. You’ll also undertake 20 hours of personal counselling. Your personal counsellor will be part of our university-approved network of professional counsellors. Undergoing clinical supervision with a counsellor is a vital part of becoming a skilled and knowledgeable reflective therapeutic practitioner.

Teaching and learning
You’ll study this course for two academic years; an academic year lasts from September to June. This course is taught on a part-time basis, and you’ll need to attend teaching on campus for one day a week. In addition to on-campus teaching sessions, you’ll need access to a private space to attend occasional online training sessions. This will require the use of a personal computer or equivalent device, and access to the internet.
