Training requirements to qualify as a solicitor
This is the full LPC master’s course and forms part of the vocational stage of training required if you wish to qualify as a solicitor. The Solicitors Regulation Authority recognises this course as meeting its training requirements and covering the necessary legal topics.
As part of your course, you’ll:
- Study interactive workshops based on realistic case studies that explore the challenge of professional practice
- Learn from a team of academic staff who are qualified lawyers with significant professional experience
- Have a choice of option modules that will enable you to tailor your qualification to your areas of interest
- Complete an extended written dissertation on a subject of your choice, with support from your tutors, during your Independent Legal Research Project
Learning to suit you
Designed to be as flexible as possible, this course will give you the option to study on campus or via online distance learning. If you choose our online distance learning delivery, you’ll be able to access our live LPC workshops anywhere in the world using Microsoft Teams. You’ll also have the opportunity to attend some on-campus sessions during key times such as induction, revision and for employability events.
Leeds Law School uses an online assessment tool which will enable you to take exams off campus. The online assessment tool uses lockdown browsers designed to increase the security of digital exams. You can install this on Windows and Apple devices to sit your exams off campus. Please note, the online assessment tool does not work on Chrome Books or tablets.
If you don’t have a compatible device, you’ll have the option to attend on campus and sit a paper exam. If this option isn’t feasible, please ensure you’re able to access the relevant IT capability.

You’ll be able to access a wide range of law textbooks online for free through Law Trove, a subscription-only service offered by Oxford University Press.

Changes to legal education and training
Legal education and training have been subject to a detailed review by professional regulators in the legal sector. The review has examined the routes to qualification as a solicitor.
In September 2021, the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) introduced the Solicitors Qualifying Information (SQE) as the route to qualification as a solicitor in England and Wales.
There is a period of transition during which the LPC route to qualification remains.
An applicant’s eligibility to follow the LPC route is subject to the provisions of the SRA, and all applicants are responsible for ensuring they satisfy the SRA’s requirements for study and qualification via the LPC route.

We may use selection criteria based on your personal attributes; experience and/or commitment to the area of study. This information will be derived from your personal statement and reference and will only be used if you have met the general entry requirements.
Independent study is a crucial part of learning at university and you will be required to undertake many hours of self-directed research and reading, and preparation and writing of assessments. Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to the specialist learning and study-skill resources. You’ll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.

Gain the skills required to provide advice and assistance to a client in the critical stages of civil and criminal litigation.
Gain an understanding of the common clauses of a will, what happens when someone dies without making a will and the necessary steps to administer an estate. You will also learn about the tax consequences of death.
Gain the skills to be able to advise clients about the taxation framework in England and Wales.
This module will teach you a basic understanding of the Solicitors' Accounts Rules 2011.
Gain an understanding of professional ethics and learn to apply and act in accordance with the core duties of the Solicitors' Code of Conduct.
Develop your writing skills so that you can communicate clearly and concisely to instil your reader with confidence in your capability as a lawyer.
Gain effective interviewing skills for communicating with clients so you can respond to their needs and provide instructions and advice.
Learn to apply the principles of good drafting in the creation and amendment of formal legal documents.
Gain the skills so you can provide advice and assistance to a client at each critical stage of a property transaction.
Learn practical advocacy skills and knowledge to present cases before courts and tribunals.
You will be introduced to a range of business operations, primarily partnerships and companies, and you will examine law and practice in relation to their formation, ongoing management and dissolution.
Become an expert in an area of particular interest through researching and writing your dissertation.
This module will introduce you to a range of primary and secondary legal sources. You will learn how to analyse and evaluate them to produce legal solutions.
What you'll learn
You will be introduced to the law surrounding cases of patients detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended by the Mental Health Act 2007).
This module will prepare you for working in employment law and practice.
You will be introduced to areas of practice in which commercial lawyers are required to advise with the drafting of commercial agreements, intellectual property rights, competition law, and agency and distribution agreements.
Gain the practical skills required to provide advice and assistance to a client in the context of a business dispute.
This module will prepare you for practice in the sale and purchase of private limited companies and business assets.
Gain the skills required to provide advice and assistance to a client in relation to a range of family matters.
You will be introduced to the fundamental principles of the law and practice of personal injury and clinical negligence litigation.
This module will give you the practical skills needed to draft and negotiate commercial leases and to give appropriate advice on the effect of obligations under the terms of commercial leases.

Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located in the libraries.
