SUPPORTING YOUR CHILD  WITH HOUSE HUNTING

LBSU Advice Service is on hand to help support your child through house hunting. In this page you'll find helpful information to make sure you know where to direct them to for support on their search.

Unipol released all the code approved private accommodation available in Leeds for the next academic year on the 20th November 2021.

Unipol is a great place to start but your child should also check Rate Your Landlord. Here they can find out how other students have rated the landlord they might be looking to sign an agreement with.

During the search for private accommodation, students often ask their parents to look to look at some tenancy agreements. You may have some expertise in this field, if not then you can suggest they send a copy of the tenancy agreement to the Students’ Union Advice Service via their online form. They have trained advisers that are available to check through the agreement and point out anything of concern or to be aware of. Any good landlord should allow them time to do this.

Some landlords / agencies will ask for a guarantor for the tenancy agreement. This means your child might ask you to sign for this. Although we don’t provide advice to parents you should make sure you are aware of what you are signing up to. You can find out more here on Unipol's guide to guarantees and parents' financial liability.

If your child has any problems during their tenancy (disrepair, deposit disputes, rent arrears etc) then they should be encouraged to contact the Students’ Union Advice Service.

If your child is living in a Code property, they can also get help in resolving issues with their property or landlord by contacting Unipol. Visit the Unipol how to complain webpage for more information.
