How can I request a coach or mentor?

1. Start by giving some thought to your goals and what you hope to achieve from working with a coach/mentor.

2. Please complete and submit your My Goals form to the People and OD Team to request a coach or mentor, or contact the team at POD@leedsbeckett.ac.uk for more information.

3. We'll then match you with a suitable colleague from our network. You'll always be matched with someone from a different School or Service within LBU.

My Goals

What is the difference between coaching and mentoring?

Both coaching and mentoring at Leeds Beckett provide a confidential, 1:1 space for you to work with a colleague removed from your day-to-day work. Both approaches are solution-orientated, future-focussed conversations about you: your goals, your challenges and your potential.

Our coaches are professionally qualified and use questioning and listening techniques to unlock your thinking. They'll work with you to help you to increase your self-awareness, clarify your goals, identify strategies to overcome obstacles and generate options for you to set a way forward.

Our mentors provide a safe space to share their experience and knowledge. They'll listen and ask questions too, yet may also offer advice to help you gain new perspectives, test your ideas, clarify issues and provide feedback.

Ultimately a coach uses a non-directive style, to enable you to come up with your own solutions. A mentor will typically be more directive, offering guidance based on their own experiences.

EXPLORING YOUR CAREER

*For career development support, our new 'Exploring Your Career' pathway in MyDevelopment can be a useful starting point which can then be used to inform your ongoing coaching/mentoring conversations. The course provides resources and strategies to help you take a strengths-based view of your current situation, explore your options, and achieve your career goals.
