playwork and therapy

The playwork and play therapy programme covers a wide variety of themes, and hosts a number of postgraduate research students.

Current research topics include: play and embodiment, playwork in prisons, play in the creative industries, the play movement in America, therapeutic treasure baskets, play therapy supervision, local authority tendering, creative drama sessions, and play in children’s hospitals.

Professor Fraser Brown, who leads the programme, is the first Professor of Playwork in the World. His role as Editor of the International Journal of Play brings him into contact with leading figures in the profession from around the World. Consequently, we have strong partnerships with a number of practice organisations, including the Association for the Study of Play (TASP) and the Academy of Play and Child Psychotherapy (APAC).
