Inclusive practice commitments

Page last updated:

Our inclusive practice commitments ensure that students are not treated less favourably or disadvantaged because of disability, age, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation (protected characteristics as defined in the Equality Act 2010).

They apply to all undergraduate and postgraduate students of the university and all staff - in either academic or professional services areas who are involved in learning, teaching, assessment or related activity. It also applies to all modules, programmes and courses, irrespective of the mode of delivery, whether these are or are not credit bearing, or extracurricular learning activities.

Our inclusive practice commitments:

How we teach is relevant and engages all students

We will:

  • Ensure inclusivity is an integral consideration of all elements of academic delivery: course development, teaching, assessment, review
  • Use lecture capture and/or permit students to use their own recording device
  • Deliver teaching sessions using a range of presentation techniques
  • Avoid last minute cancellations and/or changes of venue and, where this is unavoidable, ensure timely and effective communication
  • Avoid changes to core session content
  • Manage class activities so everyone is able to contribute to discussion and have an opportunity to get to know staff and their peers

Teaching materials can be accessed and used by all students and will be released in advance

We will provide:

  • Categorised Reading lists
  • Glossaries of new terms
  • Teaching materials made available on the VLE at least
  • 24 hours in advance of the session
  • Materials in an unlocked electronic format
  • Subtitles and transcripts, when necessary
