Proactive Payment FAQs
This academic year, the university is providing proactive financial support to eligible groups of Level 4 Undergraduate Students, to support them at university.
Eligible students will receive £1,500 paid in two instalments of £750.
To be eligible, you must be a full-time home undergraduate student studying at Level 4 (first year study) and have a household income assessed by the Student Loans Company (SLC) of zero. To qualify you must also fall into one of the following groups:
- Students who are lone parents
- Disabled students
- Students whose sponsors are in receipt of welfare benefits, such as Universal Credit or Personal Independence Payment. Your sponsor is generally a parent, guardian, or partner who has been means-tested by the SLC as part of your student loan application.
If you do not meet the criteria, you can still apply for discretionary funding from our Hardship Fund.
The proactive award will be made to eligible Level 4 Students in the current academic year. Students who do not meet the criteria can still apply for funding from our Hardship Fund.
The award will be split into two payments of £750.
No. Like any other payment from our university Hardship Fund, this will not impact your entitlement to Universal Credit.
We use information from the SLC, including your household income data. We then match this against your student record at the university.
To be eligible for a proactive payment, you must:
- Be a level 4 student.
- Have started university in the current academic year, and
- Have a household income assessed as £0 by the SLC
In addition, you must either:
- be eligible for Special Support Element of the student loan, or
- have at least one sponsor listed on your student loan application (this is usually, a parent, partner, or guardian).
If you do not meet the criteria, you can apply for discretionary funding from our Hardship Fund.
If your circumstances change during the year, your eligibility for the award may also change.
As part of your assessment, we also use data from the SLC to assess your income. Changes in the SLC’s assessment of your income may also impact your eligibility for the award.
If this happens, please contact our Student Money team, who will be able advise you of the appropriate action to take.
No, we will not ask for the money to be returned to us. However, we will not make the further proactive payment unless your eligibility changes again.
