Chaplaincy
The chaplaincy is here for staff and students. All conversations are confidential. Chaplains are available for drop-in visits and for appointments, and we have an out-of-hours support number.
Use the chaplaincy:
- Whether you have a faith (Christian, Jewish, Muslim etc.) or have no religious beliefs
- When you need someone independent and confidential to talk to
- If you're finding life difficult or you have a tricky decision to make
- If you have lost someone close to you
- If you want to explore spirituality
- Just to drop in for a chat
We are here to help you in any way that we can.
Reverend Joseph Nelson
You are welcome to come for a chat with Reverend Joseph Nelson at our chaplaincy offices across campus or arrange to meet online by making an appointment.
In addition, the chaplaincy out-of-hours support is available to staff and students on 07780 613862. A chaplain will answer the call or get back to you as soon as possible.
You can choose to see Joseph or any of our chaplains, or ask to be referred to an adviser of another faith. Call the main office on 0113 343 5071 to check availability or just drop in to the Emmanuel Centre on Woodhouse Lane.
My name is Joseph and I'm the Lutheran Chaplain for the universities in Leeds. Along with this role I am also the lead chaplain for Leeds Beckett University. Along with my job at the chaplaincy I work part time as a parish pastor for our small Lutheran congregation in Leeds.
As happens with so many people I moved to Leeds as a student in 2016 and have never left!
I recently completed a masters by research and so can definitely sympathise with the stress of assignments.
I love chatting about the deeper things in life and learning about different people's stories no matter where they come from or who they are. Much of my chaplaincy work in the past was in retirement living and has been with people who are not very religious or Christian but just want someone to chat to about what it means to be human today and where they are at with life, or God, or just to have someone to talk to about their mental health. I am also a qualified mental health first aider.
