Jenna Edwards is a BA (Hons) Social Work undergraduate at Leeds Beckett who is striving for a career as a social worker after having been supported by social services herself. She will use the money to help cover childcare costs allowing her more flexibility to take part in extra-curricular aspects of her course.
“It’s taken a lot of stress away from my first year of University. I’m going to be doing placements next year and, having a young son, I’ll need extra funding to put him in nursery."
Jenna says her motherly nature and passion for helping others, as well as her experience with the Step-In Project who supported her with her education, were the catalyst for her to pursue a career in Social Work.
Her decision to attend University was an important one, having previously been homeless, she said: “I’ve been a service user myself, so I have that insight into what my caseworkers did for me. I also saw how rewarding it was for them to see us grow and achieve – that’s why I’d love to be a social worker.”
