Studying Biomedical Science

During school and college, I undertook lots of fundraising for hospitals and charities, which has given me the opportunity to meet staff at varying levels and professions in the NHS. It's from these experiences that I learned the work biomedical scientist do behind the scenes such as diagnosing cancer in histology samples leading to quick diagnosis, treatments, and saving lives.

I managed to secure a job as a medical laboratory assistant at Spire Healthcare where I worked alongside a specialist biomedical scientist, gaining practical experience of what it's like to work in this field of science and medicine. This motivated me to choose my current course as my eyes were opened by the work I assisted with day-to-day, and the impact biomedical scientists have on the developments of treatments.

How will the Bright Futures Scholarship support you throughout your studies?

I plan to invest the funds from the Bright Futures Scholarship in educational resources, such as textbooks and software, that align with my coursework and help deepen my understanding of key concepts. Additionally, I would seek out workshops and seminars related to my field, providing me with practical skills and insights from industry professionals.

I also want to use the funds to invest in a new laptop which would allow me to better attend lectures allowing to follow along with slides on my laptop and take notes simultaneously. I would also use the money to fund travel to Manchester to continue working as a medical laboratory assistant at Spire Healthcare allowing me to gain further insight from industry professionals and provide further work experience in the histology field which I would like to pursue in my future career.
