Why did you choose to study Science of Sport Performance?

Working with athletes is a dream of mine. From being a high-level athlete at a young age, I am all too familiar with the dedication, tenacity and blood, sweat and tears that athletes put into their craft every day, and it is truly awe inspiring to watch. I can relate to them, as someone who was once in a similar position, and I know I can help to guide them to the greatness they strive for.

Studying the Science of Sports Performance is ideal for me, as I can take my current knowledge and experiences and combine them with my passion for sport. I feel all my experiences to be an asset and that they will prove valuable to help train the next generation of athletes. Additionally, I am a physical learner, so being able to relate sports science back to my own body and movements helps me to better understand the content of my course and interpret it in a way that can apply to other athletes and their training.

How has receiving the Carnegie Class of 78-82 Scholarship helped you?

The support from the Carnegie Class of 78-82 Scholarship will help me with money to travel to events, fund coaching and equipment fees and allow me to go without work for a longer period of time so that I can focus on my studies and swimming without having to sacrifice anything. Furthermore, it would allow me to pursue valuable unpaid opportunities within the sports science world without having to worry about it interfering with my studies or my job.

What would you like to do after you graduate?

My mother passed away the year just before I came to Leeds Beckett so leaving my father was difficult. I would like to complete my degree in remembrance of her, she was extremely proud and excited when I was offered my place at university. She was my greatest support and best friend.

I would like to become a performance lifestyle advisor and work with young talented athletes in performance sport. I want to take a holistic approach to supporting athletes, including mental health wellbeing and education on anti-doping. It is my dream to be working alongside coaches and supporting athletes through their journey, developing their athletic performance alongside their personal development.
