Studying Psychology
My decision to study psychology comes from both personal experiences and a deep desire to support others. I've been fascinated by psychology since high school, and when it was taken off the curriculum, it only made me more determined to understand how the brain works and how our experiences shape who we are. One of my main goals at Leeds Beckett is to meet and connect with people from different backgrounds and age groups. I genuinely believe that learning from others will help me gain new perspectives, which is important for both personal growth and for broadening my understanding of psychology. I'm particularly looking forward to placements because they'll give me the chance to explore different areas of psychology and figure out where my real interests lie.
Seeing people navigate their own challenges has opened my eyes to the complexity of the brain, especially in children, and has fuelled my passion for learning more about psychology, particularly developmental psychology. In the future, I hope to pursue a path that allows me to explore my interest in neurodivergence and neuropsychology while contributing to a better understanding of the mind. I am particularly passionate about supporting individuals with diverse cognitive experiences and finding ways to improve mental health and well-being through research, advocacy, or direct support.
How will the Soroptimist International of Leeds Scholarship help your studies?
While I've always been drawn to clinical and developmental psychology, I've started to become more interested in neuropsychology, and a placement will help me decide which direction to take. Getting that hands-on experience and seeing psychology applied in the real world is something I'm really eager for. Beyond placements, I'd also love to get involved in experiments and research projects which often take place at the university. I think it would be both fun and rewarding to contribute to actual studies and learn how research shapes the field. Having the chance to apply what I learn in class to something practical would make my time at university even more meaningful, giving me a real sense of what working in psychology is like.
