The Physical Education course made us passionate about inclusion

Second year BA (Hons) Physical Education students, Vladimir Ferko and Jack Doyle, tell us how studying the Inclusive Practice module highlighted the importance of inclusiveness and the different ways it can be implemented in the classroom.

Currently, in our second year, we had the honour to deliver an inclusive session which was enjoyable and informative as we gained crucial knowledge and experience for us to reflect upon within our module. The inclusion session was part of our ‘Inclusive practice’ module, which we had to reflect upon within a series of questions on the subject matter within the four months of taking the module. We delivered a wheelchair basketball session, which was enjoyable for all the students, making it possible for everyone to participate. It was a great experience and brought smiles to our faces, but also made us realise that we are on the right path in future teaching.

It was an excellent way to fortify and apply the knowledge we learned from the module and was a good introduction for us to start using certain inclusion techniques, such as STEP, within a teaching setting. ‘STEP’ is a tool within the inclusion spectrum (Black and Stevenson, 2011) and stands for space, task, equipment, and people. Inclusion is so important as it brings various benefits and opportunities for any individual as well as the ability to develop key skills that can lead to success in life. The experience was equally enjoyable and helpful, and I would recommend the module to someone looking to go into any form of teaching.

This module has shaped us into better teachers and individuals as a whole. We now have a deeper understanding of inclusion and are passionate about creating fun and engaging sessions for everyone, allowing everyone the same chance to grow and learn.
