My name is Eve, and I am currently studying for my Masters degree in Criminology. I am originally from Preston, but I moved to Leeds to start my undergraduate studies.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what drew you to Criminology

School of Humanities and Social Sciences stood out as an area that addresses important public issues with the aim of making a difference in people’s lives and communities. This stood out as a factor which drew me towards the area as I was looking for a degree that would allow me to make a difference. I have also always been intrigued by crime and the factors that cause individuals to commit crimes, so criminology was the ideal subject area for me. Because I was interested in learning about many aspects of crime as well as the Criminal Justice System, criminology provided me with the chance to explore a wide range of subjects and themes while grasping an understanding of the social issues relating to crime.

What made you choose Leeds Beckett?

I felt really confident and reassured when I first visited Leeds Beckett. I spoke with the staff and students who were all extremely encouraging and supportive. I had already visited several universities, but I felt that none of them had encouraged or inspired me to pursue my criminology degree, so my experience of Leeds Beckett was refreshing. The atmosphere at the university was really welcoming and friendly as well, and I could easily picture myself studying at Leeds Beckett. I also found that the university offered a variety of student accommodation options. There were several options to choose from, each with its own set of benefits.

What has been your favourite part about studying at Leeds Beckett?

Taking part in the PRisoN: Learning Together programme during my last year of undergraduate studies in criminology was one of my favourite experiences while at Leeds Beckett. When I first looked at the modules for the Criminology course I had been really intrigued by the opportunity and decided that it would be something I would work towards. Luckily, I was chosen to partake, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a unique learning experience where I was able to sit down and learn alongside serving prisoners. We were able to learn with and from each other through our discussions and I was able to put my three years of studying into perspective. Another highlight of my studies at Leeds Beckett has been gaining confidence in my work and abilities. Working independently has allowed me to trust my own judgement and become more self-assured in my capabilities. This development of skills allowed me to inspire towards and achieve a first-class degree.

What advice would you give someone thinking about studying this course?

Do it! I have thoroughly enjoyed studying criminology at both undergraduate and Masters level. I have learnt so much during my time at university as the course provides you with the opportunity to study several topics. You can mould the course to your specific areas of interest as the course offers a variety of elective modules to choose from. The topics are new and exciting, so each year of study introduces you to a new theme.
