Course - BA (Hons) Politics with International Relations

Tell us a bit about yourself and what drew you to Leeds Beckett, and your chosen subject area?

Being originally from Leeds, I thought that there was no better place to build my academia within politics other than Leeds Beckett, as Leeds is a vibrant city with an interesting political landscape. I'm currently in my penultimate year studying BA (Hons) Politics with International Relations and have been given a range of opportunities whilst being here.

I chose to study this course mainly to advance my knowledge to address things I am passionate about. I want to make positive impacts by advocating for policy changes and I believe to get to that point political knowledge, looking at politics in the past and history is the foundation. I knew Leeds Beckett would be great for me to understand how policies are shaped, how to advocate for change and mainly learning ways to create a more inclusive political landscape.

What made you choose Leeds Beckett?

When doing research for universities, Leeds Beckett came up as one that had a range of courses and research opportunities which I thought to myself would been great and make a real impact on me. I am committed to creating a more inclusive and fair world and after open evenings and extensive research Leeds Beckett clearly shared that vision. They actively promote diversity and inclusivity which resonates with my values. As a black Muslim woman, it's sometimes hard to find places which I am comfortable, and I can be myself in but with Leeds Beckett I honestly had no issue. Leeds itself is an amazing city, buzzing with culture, history and opportunities. Leeds Beckett truly a diverse place where I have met so many young people and we have all learnt from each other.

What has been your favourite thing about your time studying at Leeds Beckett?

My favourite thing so far about studying at Leeds Beckett is being able to meet people on my course with a range of opinions. I have been introduced to so many different opinion and ideas, ones which I have agreed and disagreed with, but it definitely has led me to personal growth and a more understanding mindset. I have also enjoyed the career support we have at Leeds Beckett. I have learnt so much about different careers I didn't even know existed at a point. I have been introduced to networking and the benefits of it and my favourite event hosted by Leeds Beckett was the Women in Leadership event.

Is there a piece of work or project you have worked on that you are particularly proud of, and why?

My experience of becoming one of the consorts for the Lord Mayor of Leeds (an opportunity presented by Leeds Beckett) is something I am extremely proud of. Before becoming the consort for the Lord Mayor Leeds, I didn't know what direction my life was heading career-wise. Through being the consort for the Lord Mayor of Leeds, I support the Lord Mayor in her civic and ceremonial duties but also represent the citizens of Leeds. This opportunity inspired me a lot to become more involved in local politics and advocating for things I am passionate about. Now I have a clear vision as to what I'm wanting to pursue after I finish university, which is becoming a politician, and a voice for the people.

What advice would you give someone thinking about studying your course?

I would advise:

  1. To follow their passion, as politics and international relations requires you to have an interest in understanding global affairs and the political system.
  2. Seek a diverse perspective and welcome people come from a range of backgrounds with different viewpoints and ideologies.
  3. Encourage them to get involved. It's all fun writing and learning about politics but being actively involved is a completely different rewarding experience and inspiring.
