My name is Rebekah, and I am 21 years old. My family home is near a little town called Stamford, which is where I will be returning to next year for my post grad. I am going to be doing a teacher training course. I spent five years in China when I was growing up and, while out there, I became a qualified scuba diver.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what drew you to sociology?

While I lived in China, after experiencing the culture difference, I took the time to look into its history and governance, and began to understand more about some of their different thoughts and customs. Having then seen first-hand the difference in views on topics such as class, dictatorship, censorship, gender, criminal justice and religion, my passion for sociology began.

What made you choose Leeds Beckett?

I chose Leeds Beckett due to a phone call with the Head of Sociology around results day, and it made me feel as though this was the right place for me. I then came up to Leeds for the day to visit and I just knew it was where I wanted to be. I love the city.

What has been your favourite thing about your time studying at Leeds Beckett?

I can’t lie, without a doubt the best thing to come from my time at Leeds Beckett has to be the friends I’ve made. From the very first induction in the library to the friends I have met this final year, I have come across people I want to be in my life forever.

What advice would you give someone thinking about studying this course?

This is a tricky one. As someone who didn’t take sociology at A level as it wasn’t offered in my sixth form, I wouldn’t let that put you off. I did take philosophy and ethics though and I noticed massive correlations between the two that were extremely helpful.

My best advice to someone who is thinking about sociology is to just do it. It is such a mind-opening subject that is always so relevant to what’s going on in the world. I think there will also at least be one topic that you study that will strongly relate to you and therefore you will get to expand your knowledge and hear other opinions on something you may be going through or have experienced, which can be very useful.
