Jess Carrier - National Codes Coordinator at Unipol Student Homes.

Tell us about your current role and what it involves

I am the National Codes Coordinator, which involves operating the ANUK / Unipol National Codes for Student Accommodation. I also undertake various project work within my role.

What organisation do you work for?

I work for Unipol Student Homes, a student housing charity based in Leeds (next door to City Campus!)

How did you find this job?

Both as a student volunteer and in my previous role at Leeds Beckett Students’ Union, I worked with Unipol on joint projects on a number of occasions around student house hunting. When I left that role, I was offered the chance to interview for this job at Unipol.

What do you enjoy about your job the most?

I love working in the Higher Education sector, especially a part that helps look out for students' rights as renters and helps to ensure they have access to safe and secure housing whilst they study. This job has also offered me fantastic networking opportunities, particularly with other stakeholders such as Universities UK and the National Union of Students. I had the opportunity to do some project work on student accommodation for the Government, which was exciting.

What skills that you learnt at university have you been able to apply in your role?

My university experience has shaped my approach to work. I apply the analytical, critical thinking and research skills I gained through my degree in all aspects of my project work to deliver desired outputs, but the abilities I gained in public speaking, time management and independent learning have given me the confidence to succeed at work.
