Professor Mohammad Jahirul Hoque

Professor Mohammad Jahirul Hoque graduated from his MA degree in Peace and Development at Leeds Beckett University (formerly Leeds Metropolitan University) in 2010, as a recipient of the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship.

Following further study at the School of Oriental and African Studied (SOAS) in London and teaching and professorial roles at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Bangladesh, Professor Hoque has now been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of Metropolitan University in Bangladesh.

Can you tell us a bit about your new role and what an average day is like for you?

In my capacity as Vice Chancellor at Metropolitan University, I provide leadership and strategic direction to the institution.

An average day involves overseeing administrative matters, engaging with faculty and staff to ensure academic excellence, participating in policy development, and fostering a vibrant academic environment.

Was there anything specific about your experience studying at Leeds Metropolitan University which has helped you to get to where you are today?

My experience at Leeds Metropolitan University was transformative. The MA Peace and Development programme equipped me with critical research and analytical skills, which were instrumental in securing prestigious scholarships for further studies.

The support and mentorship from my course leader, Carolyn Rankin, and my dissertation supervisor, Alex Nunn, were invaluable.

I can also remember a number of faculty members who taught different courses across the programme who made a positive contribution to my experience.

What have been the highlights and challenges of your career so far?

A career highlight was completing my PhD at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and returning to Bangladesh to contribute to higher education.

Challenges have included navigating the complex landscape of higher education in Bangladesh and striving for academic excellence amidst resource constraints.

How has your experience of studying at Leeds Metropolitan University influenced your career?

My education at Leeds Metropolitan University significantly enhanced my research and academic abilities, enabling me to pursue a successful academic career.

I was awarded the Commonwealth Scholarship of the UK government as the first graduate of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Bangladesh to complete the MA in Peace and Development at Leeds Met.

I was also awarded the same scholarship for the second time to complete my PhD in Development Studies at SOAS.

I am the only student and faculty member to have received the Commonwealth Scholarship twice.

Has your experience of studying at Leeds Metropolitan University in the UK influenced anything you plan to implement as VC at Metropolitan University in Bangladesh?

I plan to implement best practices in academic excellence and research promotion which I observed during my time at Leeds Metropolitan University.

Additionally, I aim to establish international collaborations and exchange programmes to enrich the academic experience at Metropolitan University.

What made you want to study at Leeds Metropolitan University?

Leeds Metropolitan University’s reputation for quality education and its renowned faculty in the field of Peace and Development were the primary reasons for my choice. The vibrant academic environment and multicultural exposure were also appealing.

What advice would you give to future students thinking about studying MA Peace and Development at Leeds Metropolitan University?

I would advise future students considering the MA Peace and Development programme at Leeds Beckett University to fully engage in the coursework, seek guidance from professors, and actively participate in research opportunities. It is a programme that can truly shape your academic journey.
