Course - BA (Hons) Creative Writing
Tell us a bit about yourself and what drew you to your course?
I am a mature student in my 50s with a background in fashion design and retail. Music, art, and photography are a big part of my life. I attended a creative writing course a few years ago and loved it. I have step, birth, and adopted children and, a busy family and social life.
What made you choose Leeds Beckett?
A friend who was studying English Literature encouraged me to apply. I looked for courses at Leeds universities and settled on Leeds Beckett as the course really appealed to me.Which modules have you gained the most from on your course so far and why?
Every module has been interesting and informative. I enjoyed the first semester modules the most, especially Contemporary Literature as it brought new writing to my attention. I particularly liked reading work by people of colour because their experiences often echo my own. The Reflective Writing module has helped me to establish regular writing habits and useful reflection on that work. I loved Writers Workshop 1 and WW2 has been equally enjoyable, I can see that each one complements the other and builds writing skills. What other opportunities have you had at Leeds Beckett University outside of your course experience?
I have not looked at many other things because my sole focus is on getting the best degree I can. I am aware of many things going on at the university. There are numerous societies to join and lots of events to take part in. There is a Spoken Word Society for students and competitions available to enter and attend. What has been your favourite thing about your time studying at Leeds Beckett?
I am enjoying learning as an older student. The encouragement to think for yourself and, to think freely, appeals to me. Discovering that work by people who are not white and not western is highly valued and respected, has been exhilarating. The staff are incredibly friendly, supportive, and enthusiastic. How is the course supporting you for life after university?
I am in the first year of my studies and career paths have already been discussed. The benefits of my course in terms of work have also been talked about.
