Alumni Spotlight: Becoming a Global Engagement Officer

Hi, I’m Felix! My real name is Huyen Do and I’m from Vietnam!

I’m the Global Engagement Officer for the School of Business and the whole Global Village – Global Engagement Team. My role is to support international students, helping them settle into their student life in Leeds, and making the most of their time at Leeds Beckett University.

With extensive experience in higher education both in Vietnam and now over a year in the UK, I’ve organised a variety of events to create exciting, meaningful experiences for students. I have a passion for crafting unique events where students can connect, have fun, and also learn something new. A fun fact about me: Besides this job, I’m also a dancer and I’ve performed in a musical as well – yep, I loveee being on stage.

What are the five best things about studying in Leeds?

  1. Leeds is truly a student city—vibrant, full of fun activities for young people, and known for its great nightlife. There are plenty of amazing nights out and good pubs as well! By the way, have you tried doing the Otley Run?
  2. Leeds has the perfect location if you love traveling and want to explore the UK. Since it’s right in the middle of the country, it doesn’t take long to get to London or Edinburgh. Plus, Yorkshire is full of beautiful places and charming cultural towns—you should definitely get out and explore! Our Global Village team also organises lots of cool weekend trips to nearby cities and towns, so make sure to check out our social media to sign up.
  3. Leeds is very ‘diverse’, so expect cool cultural events happening every month, celebrating different traditions and festivals. And of course—great food – with a big variety of cuisines. *Come to me if you’re looking for good Vietnamese restaurants recommendations! (P.S. Yes, they’re pretty authentic!)
  4. Studying at LBU is very practical, and I’ve been able to apply what I learn directly to my profession. My lecturers were super supportive and introduce plenty of real-world opportunities, including hands-on activities and networking events. They also helped us a lot during exam and dissertation periods, so make the most of their guidance! Also, don’t forget to use the library—there are tons of useful books that can help you.
  5. One of the best things about being a student in Leeds, to me is its affordability. Compared to other big UK cities, the cost of living here is quite reasonable. Rent isn’t too expensive, and with a student ID, you can get discounts at many shops and brands. If you pick up a part-time job, it can help with budgeting and saving—which means more money for travel!

Have you been involved in any social activities?

When I was a student at Leeds Beckett University, I took part in many activities hosted by Global Village and the LBU Students' Union. They organised lots of different events, such as welcome parties, cultural exchanges, and trips etc. That’s where I met some of my best friends here, and we still hang out even after graduation. Everyone was really friendly, welcoming, and helpful, giving me lots of great tips when I first arrived in the UK. And then after a while, I took on those same ‘missions’—first as a Global Ambassador and now as a Global Engagement Officer.

What are your plans for the future?

I’m very excited about my current role and can’t wait to bring lots of exciting activities and experiences to Leeds Beckett University students! Also, get ready for Global Week 2025, where we’re organising a series of amazing activities, cultural celebrations, and unforgettable moments. I’ve planned some interesting events, so stay tuned—you won’t want to miss it!

I’m also planning to travel more (maybe visit every famous destination in Europe), take on bigger performing projects, and keep enjoying my life to the fullest!

What advice would you give to someone from your country?

Moving to a different country can be challenging and overwhelming, especially when you're trying to obtain a whole degree (or more) in a different education system and language. But trust yourself—you’ve got this! Work hard every day, even in the smallest tasks, don’t be afraid to try new things, and grab every opportunity that comes your way.

You’re literally living the life you have seen on screens, so make every second count and enjoy the experience. You can do it my fellow Viet friends!
