We urgently need to reimagine education in response to current global challenges and mass education. In classrooms, creative approaches are critical in supporting learners to connect knowledge and generate new ideas.
On this online course, you’ll explore a range of creative pedagogical tools and international perspectives. Your learning will provide you with a rich cultural lens and intercultural dialogue across countries.
This course will empower you to:
- Promote greater understanding of creative pedagogies (pedagogy, curriculum and assessment) and their grounding in teacher and learner creativity
- Promote holistic learning, interdisciplinary thinking, critical thinking, wellbeing, global citizenship skills within educational settings
- Empower learners to become emotionally and culturally literate and connect educators globally through the approach you take to learning
- Activate social change through education
- Support the delivery of a wide range of academic syllabise and exam boards, and apply this to curricula from across the world

This short course will enable you to network with practitioners and researchers from a range of backgrounds and share ideas about how to support the development of creative pedagogies.
Ground your learning in practice
Your learning will be grounded in professional practice and will follow an action-research cycle. You’ll be supported to critically reflect on your own professional practice in a global context. You’ll draw from a research informed community of practice to refine and shape new pedagogies in your own context. This will develop your professional skills and knowledge.

Applicants who do not meet this requirement may be assessed through the recognition of prior learning process which will include submitting evidence of the ability to study successfully at level 6. All applicants will need to have prior experience of working with children or young people in a formal learning context with either individuals or groups or whole class and will need to have access to a professional educational setting e.g. nursery, school, and alternative setting.
All applicants should have the ability to use basic word processing software and presentation software (e.g. PowerPoint and Word), and ability to use search engines to support research.
Your application should be supported by a reference from the professional educational setting you will be accessing alongside your studies; you can download our reference template for completion.

112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 3 Highers of which at least 2 must be grade H5 or above.IELTS

Mature Applicants
Our university welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. All students will be considered through the contextual admissions policy described above. If you do not meet the requirements through the contextual admissions policy, we may still be able to make you an offer if you have recent relevant work experience through our 'Recognition of Prior Learning' policy. Please ensure that you list both your qualifications and any relevant work experience in your application so that we can consider you under both schemes where applicable. All applicants should meet our standard entry requirements of GCSE grade C in English language and, where specified, Maths. Alternative qualifications such as functional skills are accepted in lieu of GCSEs for most courses.Independent study is a crucial part of learning at university and you will be required to undertake many hours of self-directed research and reading, and preparation and writing of assessments. Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to the specialist learning and study-skill resources. You’ll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.

Distance learning

Studying a distance learning course offers the convenience and flexibility to make education work for you. Whether you’d like to fit your studies around childcare, develop your skills while working or, quite simply, want to learn from the comfort of your own home, we can help you gain a qualification at a time and pace that suits your lifestyle.
Like our students on campus, you’ll have the same excellent teaching and learning resources, however you’ll find these online instead of a lecture theatre. Not only are all the modules taught online, but you’ll also have access to an online community and more than 140,000 books and journals in our online library.

Overall workload
Each module on our distance learning courses is individually designed to maximise your learning so study requirements will vary. As a general guideline, you’ll need to allocate around 10 hours per week to complete each module, plus a further five hours for additional reading and assignments. However, this may vary depending on the module. Teaching and learning will be delivered using a range of interactive resources. This typically includes audio and video content, group discussions, reflective exercises, quizzes, online reading and much more. All these resources are delivered through our Virtual Learning Environment and can be accessed at a time and place that suits you.
What you'll learn
This module will promote greater understanding of creative pedagogies and their grounding in teacher and learner creativity. We’ll critically examine a wide range of theoretical, historical, philosophical, sociological and contemporary creative pedagogies in educational and community settings. These will have a focus on empowering learners and teachers through experiential, child centred and engaging cultural learning. We’ll address wider contemporary societal and educational concerns such as mass education and wellbeing. You’ll gain insight into national and international creative arts partners’ innovative practices through online seminars. The module will draw on extensive active research projects with young people through Carnegie School of Education and with internationally acclaimed practitioners and researchers. You’ll use these experiences and your academic reading as a foundation to critically reflect upon creative pedagogies in different contexts with a range of learners.

Other study-related expenses to consider: materials that you will need to complete your course such as books (whilst the library provides access to readings recommended for your modules, you may wish to purchase your own copies of some books); you can also make suggestions for books to be added to Library stock; placement costs (these may include travel expenses and living costs); student visas (international students only); printing, photocopying and stationery (you may need to pay for multiple copies of your dissertation or final project to be printed and bound); events associated with your course such as field trips; study abroad opportunities (travel costs and accommodation, visas and immunisations). Dr Lisa Stephenson is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Education. Her teaching and research specialism is creative (drama) learning. She is founder and director of Story Makers Company, a practice-based research centre which champions creative pedagogies and relational learning.
