What you'll learn
Gain an insight into computers, operating systems and networks. You'll discover how they work internally and with each other to provide the common computing experience with which we are all familiar.
Develop your core understanding of many aspects of computer science. This will include software engineering, computer networking, digital media, AI, cloud computing, sustainable computing and big data.
Learn how to think like a programmer. This module introduces core programming concepts such as variables and data types, sequence, selection and iteration, basic algorithms, and structured programming. With a focus on traditional procedural type programming, you'll develop problem-solving skills by designing and implementing algorithms to address common computing challenges, building a strong foundation for further programming study.
Develop the skills needed to design and build effective database systems. This module introduces database modelling, development and implementation skills. This module equips you with database modelling and implementation, while exploring the organisational contexts in which databases are used. You'll consider ethical, professional, and data protection issues alongside practical development skills. By the end of the module, you'll be able to design and implement a database system to meet the needs of a simple business application.
Build on your programming knowledge by exploring object-oriented programming and its associated design techniques. You'll study key concepts such as classes, inheritance, and polymorphism, and learn how to implement them using a modern object-oriented language. As the module progresses, you'll develop more complex programs structured across multiple files and classes, reflecting contemporary software architectures. You'll also learn to apply object-oriented design using appropriate modelling notation.
Develop the underpinning knowledge required to understand the field of software engineering. We'll specifically focus on the underlying theory, supporting tools, techniques and development processes.
What you'll learn
Develop advanced programming skills from both a technical and team-based perspective. This module explores topics such as exception handling, interfaces, collections, and algorithm analysis, alongside collaborative development practices. You'll gain an understanding of algorithm efficiency and problem-solving techniques including searching, sorting, and recursion, preparing you for complex software development challenges.
Explore the technologies that power interactive websites and web-based systems. This module examines client-side, server-side, and data storage technologies, focusing on the three-tier architecture that underpins modern web applications. Through experimentation and real-world case studies, you'll analyse how data is flows between tiers and how applications manage user interaction. You'll also consider key issues around data validation, performance, and security within contemporary web environments.
Extend your programming capabilities by applying them to systems level programming. We'll focus on how to program in lower-level languages and work directly with operating system interfaces. You'll enhance your understanding of toolchains in support of compilation, linking, and loading.
Machine learning has become an important tool for data mining and analysis. In this module, you'll gain a solid understanding of how key machine learning techniques work and how to implement them effectively. While the module maintains a strong balance between theory and practice, it places greater emphasis on practical application whenever possible. By the end, you'll have a clear appreciation of the role of models in machine learning, along with key concepts such as learning techniques, feature extraction, sampling, and model evaluation.
Further your software development skills by working within a small group to design, develop and present a software engineering solution to a case-study based problem.

Extend your database development skills by designing and building more advanced database applications. This module focuses on procedural and non-procedural database programming, reusable code, and appropriate constraints. Working from a case study, you'll identify requirements, design solutions, implement and test database systems. You'll collaborate as part of a data development team, applying organisational models, and demonstrate professional communication, ethical practice, and organisational models.
What you'll learn
Complement your practical programming knowledge with an understanding of software engineering practices in a professional environment. You'll study topics such as system validation and verification, effective requirements elicitation, software quality control, cost estimation models, and risk analysis.
Develop a deep understanding of the technologies and infrastructures that support development of service-based software systems. Learn how to create fully working applications by using a collection of remote independent services.
Enhance your professional and entrepreneurial skills. You'll work in a small development team to identify, research, plan, design, develop, evaluate and present a software-based solution to a real problem.

Examine how to build cloud services and explore the technologies required to provide these to client-side systems. You'll study the established protocols that are used to communicate with server-side software and consider aspects such as security and n-tier systems.
Explore current standards, tools, and technologies used to engineer modern web applications. This module adopts a high-level, tool-based approach to design and development, enabling you to evaluate, select, and apply appropriate technologies for different contexts. You'll develop both practical and analytical skills to design, build, and assess robust internet applications that meet professional expectations, industry standards, and user needs.
Take a practical and strategic approach to advanced data and database development. This module focuses on modelling, design, and programming strategies for modern database applications. You'll explore solutions across different stages of database projects, including ETL processes and end-user reporting. By the end, you'll design high-quality, reusable, and performant code while considering team collaboration and professional practice.
Advanced machine learning has proven to be an important tool for data mining and analysis. In this module, you'll build on your understanding from Machine Learning Techniques for AI, looking at how advanced machine learning techniques work and how to implement them effectively. Ultimately, you'll be able to carry out complete learning tasks from start to finish on real problems, such as text and image processing, and similar areas.
This module equips you with a solid understanding of mobile systems and the challenges of developing for resource-constrained devices. You'll investigate the architectures, platforms, and development techniques used to create efficient, high-performing mobile applications. By the end of the module, you'll be able to approach complex software issues systematically with creativity and precision, demonstrating originality and systematic problem-solving in your solutions.
This module introduces modern image and video processing techniques and their applications in embedded and intelligent systems. You'll explore key concepts in digital image and video processing and learn to apply techniques such as image filtering, denoising, enhancement, and restoration. Upon completion, you'll be able to critically apply tools and methods for extracting information from multimedia data, including surveillance imagery.
Explore how modern web applications and networks are protected, and attacked. This module provides a practical introduction to security mechanisms, threats, and defences, including the OWASP Top 10 Web Application Security Risks. You'll conduct security assessments of websites, configure firewall rules, and implement VPNs, while exploring strategies to mitigate risks in web applications and organisational networks connected to the public Internet.
What you'll learn
Develop an awareness of the methods and skills required to carry out master's-level research successfully. You'll reflect critically on your own development in the context of your chosen programme of study. Your final product or dissertation must demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of your field of study and a critical awareness of issues at the forefront of our discipline. You'll understand the application of intelligent systems in everyday life and how to automate complex scenarios. You'll look at prototyping smart systems and the tools and techniques used to develop them for a connected world. We'll explore how to program automation features in devices such as wearable technologies, and home-automation technologies. You'll develop a critical understanding of the components and principles that form an IoT system and how to critically analyse a problem, build a prototype and deploy a smart system using appropriate tools and techniques.
Discover how data can drive smarter decisions and unlock new insights. This module introduces you to the tools, techniques, and methods used to analyse, interpret, and visually represent complex data. You'll explore both theoretical and practical approaches to data analytics and knowledge discovery, and gain a critical understanding of how these techniques are applied in real-world contexts. By the end of the module, you'll be equipped to turn raw data into clear, compelling insights that support better decision-making.
Examine fundamental underlying software technologies, such as understanding and debugging C and assembly code, and perform reverse engineering and analysis of malware. You'll carry out a hands-on analysis of binary files using static and dynamic analysis techniques to determine the behaviour of malware.
This module explores the principles, models, and methodologies behind advanced database management systems, with a focus on data warehousing, integration, quality, and reporting. You'll learn how to extract, merge, and cleanse data, while critically addressing common data quality issues and comparing different approaches to handling them. Building on this foundation, you'll evaluate the role of data warehouses and knowledge discovery technologies within business intelligence (BI) frameworks. You'll examine how these tools support strategic decision-making and tackle real-world business information challenges. By the end of the module, you'll be equipped to apply relevant theories, methodologies, and strategies to design and implement robust BI solutions. You'll develop both technical proficiency and a critical understanding of how data warehouse systems contribute to effective decision support in complex business contexts.
Learn about fundamental principles and approaches to intelligent systems, autonomous behaviour, sensing and control. You'll use practical examples of simulated robotic systems, open-source robot/A.I. systems and software to drive your learning. You'll also be expected to develop or modify software for simulating simple behavioural and reaction patterns of robotic and other intelligent agents/systems using tools such as ROS, MATLAB, and Simulink.
Study the techniques involved in assembly language programming. You'll look into the various approaches of design and programming modern day computer systems at a very intricate level.
This course offers the opportunity to take a ‘placement’ year – a year of paid employment in industry which will build your skills and experience. This is usually taken between the second and third year of your degree and will extend the length of your course by an additional year.
