Welcome
PALS (Peer-Assisted Learning Scheme) is a student-led peer support community that helps first-year Law students connect, build confidence and support one another as they navigate university life. Through relaxed, peer-led sessions across the academic year, you can ask questions, share experiences and learn from more experienced second and third-year students who have recently been in your shoes. Whether you're looking for tips on studying, advice on university life, opportunities to meet new people or simply a supportive space to ask questions, PALS is here to help you make the most of your first year at Leeds Law School. First-year students joining us in September 2026 will automatically become members of the scheme.
About the scheme
PALS (Peer Assisted Learning Scheme) supports our students transition into university life. First-year students learn from trained Student Leaders in their second or third years who understand exactly what starting a Law degree feels like - because they've been there.
Through friendly, informal peer-led sessions, students will get to grips with university study, make connections across the Law School and find their feet faster. Student Leaders will develop valuable leadership, communication and facilitation skills along the way.
PALS complements Law School teaching and the wider support available at Leeds Beckett.

Jill Dickinson
Hi everyone, I'm Jill Dickinson. I'm Professor of Law and Professional Development at Leeds Law School. I launched PALS in 2025 and enjoy continuing oversight of the scheme. When I'm not working, I enjoy being outdoors including skiing, cycling, paddleboarding, and walking the dog.
Samantha Frazer
Hello, my name is Samantha Frazer. I am the PALS Programme Coordinator and one of the Law Lecturers here at Leeds Law School. Outside of work, I enjoy indulging in the simple pleasure of a brew, a biscuit, and a good book. I enjoy cooking (and eating!), listening to music (especially 60’s music), doing yoga and travelling. You can imagine my excitement, therefore, when I ended up doing yoga at an Ashram in India where The Beatles once stayed - do ask me about it when you see me if you're interested!

Hello everyone! I’m Damarie Kalonzo, I am a Lecturer here at Leeds Law School and a PALS Advisor. I was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya – something you will hear about a lot when we interact in seminars and lectures! When I’m not teaching, I enjoy watching an engrossing drama and comedy series or curling up on the sofa with my latest fiction read!

Hi, my name is Sally Everson. I am the Student Engagement Officer at the Law School and a PALS advisor. In my spare time I love being outdoors and active. My happy place is up a mountain or by a lake. I’m also a bit of a bookworm and love a good coffee!

How PALS works
- Students are enrolled automatically - Every first-year Law student is part of PALS from day one. No sign-up needed
- Join peer-led sessions - informal sessions across the year, run by trained Level 5 and 6 Student Leaders
- Connect at socials - Social events throughout the year help students build friendships across the Law School
- Grow or lead - Students can build confidence as a Learner, then apply to become a Student Leader

You're automatically enrolled when you join Leeds Law School. Session dates are shared at induction and on this page - just come along to your first PALS session.

PALS student leadership is open to any Level 5 and 6 students studying at Leeds Law School. To apply for the scheme, you need to submit your CV and a covering letter of a maximum of 500 words, detailing why you want to become a Student Leader/why you would be a good candidate/what skills you would bring to the role. Email: lawpals@leedsbeckett.ac.uk with the subject heading 'Application for Student Leader role 2026/27' by the 9th October 2026.

PALS sessions are run by Student Leaders. All L4 learners are invited to join in the sessions to ask questions and engage with the leaders. You'll need to sign-up to attend sessions. PALS sessions will automatically appear on your timetables. They are not mandatory and appear the same way module drop-in sessions on your timetable do. Simply turn up to a session and enjoy being part of PALS!
