If you're travelling outside of the UK for a university related activity, such as a Placement, Study Abroad, or Field Trip, then you're eligible for free Travel and Assistance Insurance provided by Chubb.

How to apply for Travel and Assistance Insurance

Application processes vary depending on the type of trip.

Field Trip
  • If travelling with a group, your team leader will guide you on the application process. Field trip team leaders can access the insurance and risk checklist on this page
  • If travelling alone or without a staff coordinator, please complete the MyHub form
Placement Trip
Study Abroad Trip
  • Complete the MyHub insurance application form
Any Other Trip
  • Fill out the MyHub insurance application form
Emergency Assistance While Abroad

If you require urgent assistance during your university trip abroad, contact our insurer, Chubb, directly at +44 (20) 7173 7796. Please quote the policy number provided to you in the Insurance email sent before your departure. You can also access emergency support via the Chubb Travel Smart app by using the 'Call' icon. Instructions on how to download and use the Mobile Application are detailed below.

University student travel insurance provides coverage for students traveling on a university related activity, such as a placement, study abroad, or field trip abroad. Student travel insurance covers unexpected events like medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost belongings, and more while abroad. Some universities or countries require proof of travel insurance for student visas or enrolment. Check with your host institution or embassy.

If you are going on a study abroad trip to US or Australia, then you'll need to purchase additional student healthcare cover.

Pre-existing medical conditions are covered if travel is not against medical advice. However, expenses such as repeat prescriptions and routine check-ups, are not covered under this policy. If you’d like to discuss your specific medical circumstances and may need special travel arrangement for the trip, please contact our team for further guidance.

The insurance covers both your study period and personal holiday in the same country, but the personal holiday coverage is capped at the duration of the study period or a maximum of two weeks, whichever is shorter. The total trip length should not exceed 365 days.

For example, if you're studying in Madrid for a semester (four months), you could also have up to two weeks for personal time in Spain, and the insurance would cover both the study and holiday periods.

You might be insured if you let us know about these activities beforehand so we can inform our insurers. However, local safety standards might differ from the UK, so make sure you follow safety procedures.

Once your Travel Insurance application is approved then an insurance email will be sent with the information on how to download the Chubb Travel Smart mobile application.

If you believe you need to make a claim, please contact the Insurance and Risk team immediately. We will guide you through the next steps to ensure your claim is processed successfully. You may be required to obtain specific documentation, such as a police or witness report. Additionally, supporting documents like receipts, medical invoices may be necessary to submit to our travel insurers for a successful claim.

Claims are typically processed within 2-4 weeks, but sometimes it can vary depending on the complexity of the case and the supporting information required.
