Leeds Beckett's Support Worker Service offers a variety of support to disabled students.

Your Leeds Beckett disability adviser or needs assessor (Disabled Students Allowance) may recommend you have a support worker which is arranged by our Support Worker Service.

Study Skills App Finder

A Study Skills App Finder guide has been created that will enable you to find websites and apps that will aid your studies in a range of areas. Selecting the area that you may need support in will produce a range of options that you can explore. Included within each option is a brief overview, information regarding price (most should be free in some form) and a link to tutorials on how you can best use these apps and websites.

What support is available?

  1. Practical Support Assistants

    Support around campus such as opening doors and moving chairs (does not push wheelchairs).

  2. Notetakers

    Takes notes in taught sessions.

  3. Library Support Assistants

    Support with accessing library materials such as locating, carrying, and reading written materials.

  4. Study Assistants

    Offer support in-class or outside of sessions to help you complete your work.

  5. Lab/workshop support workers

    Practical support in lab and studio settings.

  6. Prompter

    Points out important things and keeps you on track in exams.

  7. Reader

    Reads out exam questions.

  8. Scribe

    Writes down your exam answers for you.

  9. Specialist Mentors

    One-to-one support, helping you develop strategies for staying motivated, coping with stress, and helping you establish healthy and realistic working patterns to reduce the challenges of studying at university.

  10. Specialist Study Skills Tutors

    One-to-one support to develop your academic skills, help you learn more effectively and become an independent learner.

  11. Sign Language Interpreters

    British Sign Language (BSL) interpretation of lectures, seminars, practical sessions, etc.

  12. Sighted Guides

    Mobility support for blind and visually impaired students.

How do I access a support worker?

Apply for Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) via the GOV.UK website.

The Disability Advice team can support you to complete your DSA application. Please book into an online drop-in session or attend an in person drop in on either campus.

  • Look out for DSA2 letter (outlining support)
While you are applying for DSA you can also access Leeds Beckett drop-in sessions here:
  • Meet with a Leeds Beckett Disability Adviser (to discuss your needs)
  • Complete our 'Disability, Access and Inclusion - More About You' form. You can then book an appointment with a Leeds Beckett Disability Adviser via MyHub
  • In the meeting, the Disability Adviser will create a Reasonable Adjustment Plan (RAP) with you. This may include a recommendation for a Support Worker

I've had an appointment with a Leeds Beckett Disability Adviser, what now?

If a Disability Adviser has recommended any of the following support:

  • Practical Support Assistant
  • Notetaker
  • Library Support Assistant
  • Study Assistant
  • Lab/workshop support workers
  • Exam Support Workers
  • Sign Language Interpreters

You will be contacted on your student email address and asked to confirm if you would like to access the support that has been recommended for you.

You will be asked to complete a 'Support Worker Agreement' form which outlines relevant policies and processes (e.g. cancellation policy, consent, etc.).

We will arrange your support and email you with further details, including the name(s) of your support worker(s).

I've got my DSA 2 letter, what now?

If your DSA 2 letter states you have Specialist 1-1 Study Skills or Specialist Mentoring provided by Leeds Beckett, we will check with you that you would like this support and will then put this in place.

  1. DSA 2 received

  2. Invitation to support sent including link to SWS referral agreement form

  3. Accept support and complete form

  4. Sufficient information provided

  5. Added to support allocation list

  6. Availability matched, tutor/mentor allocated

  7. Initial support session booked in

  8. Support in place

Do you have a concern about a student?

If you have concerns about a student relating to their disability/long term condition, you can contact Disability Advice on 0113 812 5831 or email disabilityadvice@leedsbeckett.ac.uk during office hours for advice and consultancy on managing the concern. A member of the team will take some details and will liaise with colleagues and advise and/or signpost as appropriate.
