Guidance and information for students with children or parental responsibilities.
Many of our students have children or other dependents to care for whilst they are at university.Â
Others may become parents or have additional responsibilities during their time at Leeds Beckett. The information on this page is intended to provide key points to help navigate university life with children.
Information for student parents
If childcare issues prevent you from attending classes, please ask the tutor for any relevant materials to help you catch up. Please inform your course administrator of absences as soon as possible. Student Advice can provide contact details.
Lots of the routes around campus are accessible for parents with buggies and prams (or those with disabilities) and are signposted. The university and campus map can help you find buildings. You may also wish to use Accessable to view our campus buildings in more detail.
Babies and children are allowed on campus and in social spaces, such as cafes, and in the library if supervised at all times.
Colouring packs are available from the library welcome desks.
The School Practice Collection, located on the first floor of the Headingley library, has children's books and any student is welcome to borrow these. Students attending appointments in the Student Services centres with their children can request colouring books and crayons at the Student Advice desk.
There are also toys available for small children in the quiet spaces (see section below). At Headingley Campus, there is a play area in the adjoining Beckett Park.
Baby changing facilities are available in the following locations:
Headingley Campus:
- Accessible toilet in Campus Central (G07)
- Accessible toilet adjacent to Security at James Graham Main Reception (JGG33C)
City Campus:
- Accessible toilet next to the refectory in the Rose Bowl
- Accessible toilets, ground floor (behind the Gaia café) in Calverley building
- The Hive
Both our campuses are entirely breastfeeding friendly.
If you are pregnant, feeding a baby or need a place to express you can access our quiet spaces:
- At Headingley Campus, this is in Priestley Hall
- At City Campus, this is in the Leslie Silver Building
These rooms can be accessed by speaking to staff in the Student Services centres. The rooms can be booked for 45-minute slots and are booked on a first-come first served basis. Each room has comfy seating, pillows and blankets. We have a small stock of essentials in the rooms such as nappy bags, maternity pads, milk bags and breast pads in case anyone runs out.
Secured fridges to store milk are also available in each Student Services centre (only available during staffed hours).
We have a small range of toys and books in the room for anyone bringing a baby or toddler with them.
Students can also ask their school if there are any building-specific rooms that could be used.
The Money Advice team can provide advice on financial support for parents and details of any benefits/funding that you may be entitled to claim. The money advice line is open:
- Monday-Thursday, 10:00-12:00
- Tel: 0113 812 5593
Please see the webpage for further information and ways of contacting the team.
The Hive have highchairs available for use at both sites and changing facilities at City Campus. The Hive offer a free children's meal with an adult's meal at both sites and have colouring books and crayons children can use while in the venue.
Leeds Beckett students can get a free child’s meal when any adult is purchasing a full meal in the Rose Bowl food court and Headingley food court.
Please note that this offer is only available for children aged 12 or under. Highchairs are available in both food courts.

The Skills for Learning website has many useful resources on all aspects of academic skills, including time management! You can also access podcasts and workshops (recordings available if you can't make it to a session in person). Individual appointments also available.
Childcare
Our university does not have an on-site nursery, we recommend looking at Leeds City Council’s Nurseries page for more information on places in the city.
If you are looking for childminders or other forms of childcare such a private nursery or a nanny, Childcare.co.uk is a networking platform for parents and childcare providers, it shows reviews and allows searches in distance from a postcode, the results can then be filtered by childcare type.
You can use the Childcare Calculator on the Gov.uk page to aid you in working out if you are eligible for any government support towards your childcare costs.
