Giorgio Macaluso is an Italian postgraduate student at Leeds Beckett, currently studying MSc Sound and Music for Interactive Games. In this blog, he talks through what he enjoys most about his course and offers some advice to others who may be considering studying at Leeds Beckett.
Introduce yourself – tell us who you are and where you're from?
My name is Giorgio, I'm from Italy and I'm currently a student at Leeds Beckett University.
Why did you choose to study MSc Sound & Music for Interactive Games?
In 2021, I started to gain a strong interest in sound design for video games and I luckily met a couple of Italian students who studied the MSc Sound & Music for Interactive Games course at Leeds Beckett. I immediately recognised that they had an in-depth knowledge in the matter of game audio and they also spoke enthusiastically about the course. After some time and a few experiences as a freelancer sound designer, I decided that I wanted to upgrade my knowledge, so I applied for the course.
What do you enjoy most about your course and why?
One aspect I particularly enjoy is the focus on game audio, supported by both theory and practice. The first semester of this Master's was mainly focused on understanding the characteristics and implications of interactive game audio. Additionally, it aimed to teach industry practices through the implementation of sound design and music into a game engine.
What does the future hold for you?
My personal goal is to get involved in the game industry as a AAA sound designer, however, the course also gives me the possibility to aim for other kinds of positions (such as a technical sound designer or game music composer).
What would you say to someone considering studying your course at Leeds Beckett?
To anyone considering studying this course at Leeds Beckett, especially international students like me, I would say that England is one of the best European countries for studying and working in game audio.
I would advise you not to be discouraged by the VISA requirement you need as a student in the UK. The procedure was easier than expected and the university provided assistance when any difficulties occurred.
