Course: MA Music Production

Tell us a bit about yourself, why you chose to study your course and what interests you the most about the subject area?

I began my musical journey at the age of 10, when I took up the guitar and cello. Undergoing classical training, I honed my skills and completed my Grade 5 in cello and Grade 4 in guitar (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music examinations). Alongside my instrumental lessons, I discovered a passion for collaborative music-making (jamming) and songwriting, and it was during this time that my guitar tutor introduced me to music production.

Fast forward to 2019, while pursuing my Bachelor's degree in music, I ventured into the realm of music production. This moment served as a catalyst, providing me with a creative outlet to explore diverse sonic landscapes whilst gaining a comprehensive understanding of the technology and tools that shape the overall musical experience. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I used this new-found free time to work on my production skills and learnt how to use my digital audio workstation (DAW) through YouTube tutorials.

After completing my undergraduate studies and gaining practical experience for a year and a half, I made the conscious decision to enrol in a Master's program in Music Production. This decision stemmed from my desire to acquire the necessary skills to efficiently record and mix my projects, bolster my confidence in my work, and expand my professional network.

What have been your highlights of the course so far?

The course has provided me with several highlights that have significantly contributed to my growth and development. Firstly, having access to high-end studios and equipment has been a tremendous source of motivation. It has inspired me to spend ample time in the studio, working on my projects and honing my technical skills. The opportunity to experiment with professional-grade tools and immerse myself in a conducive environment has undeniably elevated my passion for music production.

One unexpected module that stands out as a major highlight is learning how to create music for video games. As a semi-gamer myself, this module resonated deeply with me. Exploring the unique concepts and techniques associated with composing music for interactive digital experiences was both enlightening and thrilling. I thoroughly enjoyed delving into this specialized area and developing a new-found appreciation for the role of music in enhancing the gaming experience. This knowledge and skillset have sparked a desire within me to explore opportunities to utilize these skills in the future, potentially venturing into the exciting realm of game soundtracks.

Can you tell us about your experience of any specialist facilities/software you may have used and any practical opportunities on the course?

I had the opportunity to explore and utilize various specialist facilities and software, as well as engage in practical experiences that enriched my learning journey. One memorable experience involved assisting a classmate who was recording a big band in Leeds School of Arts Studio One as an assistant engineer. This practical opportunity proved to be immensely valuable as it allowed me to step outside my comfort zone and gain hands-on experience in setting up for a live studio session.

The recording session presented unique challenges, particularly due to the presence of two drummers in the band. Learning from my classmates and seeking guidance from the help desk staff, I acquired valuable insights on microphone placement and selection. This experience pushed me to expand my technical skills and adapt to the demands of a complex recording setup. The practical knowledge I gained that day has proven to be instrumental in my growth as a music producer.

Throughout the course, the university provided numerous practical opportunities and shared information about them through emails and communication with classmates and module leaders.

What are your plans for when you complete the course?

Upon completion of the course, I intend to leverage the project portfolio I have developed during my studies to attract clients in my home country of Kenya. By showcasing my skills and accomplishments, I aim to establish myself as a reputable music producer, offering my services to musicians, artists, and other creative professionals.

In addition, I aspire to open a private studio where I can provide a conducive environment for artists to create and record their music. This studio would serve as a hub for artistic expression and collaboration, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities to deliver top-notch production quality. As my reputation grows and client base expands, I envision expanding this venture into a full-fledged commercial studio, catering to a wider range of clients and projects.

Furthermore, my passion for teaching and sharing knowledge motivates me to continue imparting my expertise. Alongside my music production endeavours, I plan to continue teaching guitar, nurturing the next generation of musicians. Moreover, I aspire to teach Music Production at an International Baccalaureate (IB) school, providing students with a comprehensive education in this field and inspiring their creative aspirations.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about studying the course?

If you're considering studying this course, I have a few pieces of advice to offer. Firstly, ensure that you have a foundation in using a DAW before starting the program. The course will challenge you in various areas, and it will be easier if you are already proficient in using a DAW. Learning to use a new DAW alongside the other course requirements can be overwhelming unless you are a quick learner.

Additionally, be prepared to engage in extensive research throughout the course. Being a Master's program, a significant portion of your learning will rely on independent research and self-motivation. Whilst your module leaders and course leader will provide guidance and direction, it is crucial to recognize that around 90% of your achievements during the course will come from your own time and effort. Embrace the role of being the driving force behind your success and take advantage of the resources available to you, such as studios and equipment. The staff at the help desk on floor 5 are very friendly and helpful (Thank me later!)

Furthermore, stay open to exploring new concepts and techniques. The field of music production is ever-evolving, and this course will likely introduce you to new approaches and technologies. Embrace the opportunity to learn and adapt to these advancements, as they can enhance your skillset and broaden your horizons.

Also, make sure to attend the events at Leeds School of Arts, they are often free and it’s a great way to network, relax and get some motivation that you too can achieve awesome status!
