Output Sports and the Carnegie School of Sport are seeking a highly motivated individual for a fully funded Masters by Research (MRES) opportunity in the field of physical development. This research position will be integrated into our LBU Strength and Conditioning (S&C) team, focusing on the men's Rugby Union Programme.

Our commitment to research excellence is evident through the remarkable achievements in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework. In this assessment, we secured the 2nd national ranking, considering both research quality and the number of contributing staff in Sport and Exercise Sciences, Leisure, and Tourism. Within the Carnegie School of Sport, the Carnegie Applied Rugby Research (CARR) centre, led by Prof. Ben Jones and Prof. Kevin Till, conducts exceptional applied research in collaboration with international and national governing bodies, as well as various professional sports teams. With over 60 researchers, the CARR centre works collectively to enhance athlete welfare and optimise performance.

Funding will consist of UK full tuition fees for one year.

A laptop will be provided and the opportunity to apply for funding to support the research project.

Project: The application of velocity-loss threshold training to a mens Super BUCS Rugby Union physical preparation programme

This project will examine the contrasting effects of velocity-based strength training (ST), specifically applying a velocity loss threshold (VLT), compared with a repetitions in reserve approach. The aim of this project is to consider the efficacy of applying a VLT approach to ST in an applied multi-modal environment. More specifically, does VLT minimize the development of residual fatigue, augmenting the simultaneous development of power and sprint speed from concurrent training stimuli, compared to a non-velocity-based approach?

This research project will be embedded within Leeds Beckett Men’s Rugby Union squad and will require in-situ data collection from their Strength and Conditioning (S&C) programme. The successful applicant will be embedded within the Leeds Beckett S&C Team for the 2023-24 season, commencing in August 2023. The applicant will be required to support their S&C delivery across the season.
