At Carnegie School of Sport, we don't believe in "heroes". We believe the best insights come from people who are willing to listen. And the best breakthroughs come from those who work together. That's why we've created a collaborative, interdisciplinary school that will give you the support you need.
Meet some of our community and find out more about what we do.
Our school was ranked second in the country in the last Research Excellence Framework (2021). That's because we offer a broad range of expertise, but we're dedicated to working collaboratively to find new and innovative solutions. Our projects go from youth sport to activity in later life, and from biomechanics to anti-doping and gender equity.
"The things that always struck me in my interactions with everyone I met was primarily how kind and welcoming everybody was, and also how driven and ambitious lots of people were. That kindness is something that stuck with me and was really the first thing that made me seriously think that Carnegie School of Sport would be a great place to work. "
"My industry experience prompted me to question why inequalities exist in youth sport and made me want to learn more deeply about effective coaching practice. I strongly believe that when a positive and inclusive environment is created, sport has the potential to transform young people’s lives."
"I undertook my PhD in collaboration with several professional rugby teams, facilitated by the university, which led to further research and consultancy opportunities beyond my PhD, and my first academic job as a senior lecturer in 2013 ... I received my Professorship in 2017, and now continue to work with professional sports teams, with a passion and curiosity to just understand a little bit more."

Without inclusivity, we won't get the perspectives we need to solve complex issues. That's why we're proud of our our diverse student community, who bring a range of different perspectives and experiences. You'll work as part of a team on projects and discussions, and learn to open your mind and consider different ideas.
"I’ve been provided with so many experience days, such as abseiling and adventurous activities, lecture opportunities, writing opportunities and amazing quality taught lectures and seminars. Even throughout Covid-19 and being at home, the level of support never dropped and the commitment to learning was so reassuring in that difficult time."Olivia MA Physical Education and Youth Sport
"If you want to study in a student-friendly city, then Leeds is definitely the place for you. The university has two beautiful campuses and a warm, friendly environment."Sherneil MSc Sport and Exercise Biomechanics
"The course was exactly what I wanted and what I needed to go into the industry. Each module throughout the three year course was completely different and that stood me in good stead. I think the best thing about the course, and the university as a whole, is the amount of guest lecturers and industry professionals they connect you with"Fraser, marketing at AFC Bournemouth BA (Hons) Sport Business Management
"It wasn’t about just coming to Leeds for university it was about making somewhere home that would allow me to become an athlete. Coming to Leeds has been one of the best decisions I’ve made and is a huge part of my success to date."Laura Weightman, middle-distance runner and Olympian BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science
"Leeds Beckett University is one of the best universities for sports and, after doing my research and attending the Open Day, it was a no-brainer. When I attended the Open Day it really cemented how I felt about the university, because it was such an inclusive and warm environment that would enable me to learn and develop."Naadrah BSc (Hons) Sport Coaching
"The university has been great. I wouldn’t have been able to complete the course without their support. I was able to work my seminars and lectures around my other commitments and if something changed last minute, which happens quite often in sport, the tutors were always there to offer support and catch me up on any work that I missed."Tom Briscoe, professional rugby league player with Leeds Rhinos BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science
