Led by Professor Nikos Stavropoulos and Dr Alan Dunn, this research cluster is concerned with spatial music and sound art within the Leeds School of Arts.
Housed in the state-of-the-art LSA Building, the work of the group covers four main areas:
- Technical (spatial audio systems and tools)
- Cognitive-aesthetic (perception and reception of spatial sound/music)
- Theoretical-analytical (understanding and conceptualising spatial music)
- Practice-based (composing and performing spatial music, including in social settings)
The cluster's work includes sound installations, mobile sound applications, music composition and live performance, film and VR film, and community workshops and, in addition to new musical compositions, the cluster has a strong focus on place, conducting extensive research on location-oriented and sound-centred art practice. Overall, the work examines the creative potential of everyday soundscapes, sound-making, and listening, as well as their relationship to place and capacity to foster deeper engagement with it.
Professor Nikos Stavropoulos
Nikos's research interests lay in the composition of multi - channel acousmatic and mixed media works, the articulation of acoustic space and its use in musical structure, as well as the development of new interfaces for sound processing and composition.
Dr Alan Dunn
Dr Alan Dunn is a Reader in Art and Design and Research Student Co-ordinator and has been with Leeds Beckett University since 2008. He currently teaches on undergrad Fine Art and supervises practice-based PhDs.
