To speak to Disability Adviser, you'll need to register your details along with evidence of your disability or condition. Find all the information you need to get support in this page.

12 August 2022 update

Disabled students requiring adjustments to assessments/examinations should contact Disability Advice as soon as possible. We can only guarantee that adjustments can be put in place if students have contacted us by the following deadlines:

Semester 1 - 7 November 2022

Semester 2 - 6 March 2023

To arrange your support, you must provide evidence of your disability such as a doctor or consultant’s letter or other evidence for example an Educational Psychologists report.

We use this to identify your needs and after talking to you we make recommendations for any adjustments needed to make to ensure you are supported and not disadvantaged for disability related reasons.

When you have provided evidence, we will create a Reasonable Adjustment Plan that will give details of any adjustments to the way you are taught or assessed, these could include:

  • Extra time in exams
  • Alternative assessments
  • Extensions to library loans
  • Personal emergency evacuation plans
  • Access to handouts and notes in advance of teaching sessions

Please upload your evidence via Evidence and Information form when you register via My Hub.

If you don’t have any evidence but would still like to access support, please contact us or attend one of our quick query sessions to talk to the team about how we can help you. We offer both online and in-person appointments.

We use a Reasonable Adjustment Plan document to share information about any adjustments that are needed these are agreed with your Adviser and will depend on the impact of your impairment in different university settings.

Once you have agreed the adjustments, they will be recorded and circulated to all the relevant people in the university. Because the support you need may change over time please contact us to review your support at any time.

A Reasonable Adjustment Plan:

  • Outlines any study related challenges you may experience
  • Details tailored support based on your individual requirements
  • Is produced in consultation with you and your Disability Adviser
  • Is shared with your course team and other relevant university departments/services

A Reasonable Adjustment Plan can include:

  • Exam or assessment adjustments (e.g. extra time, use of a PC, alternative room, etc.)
  • Access to handouts and notes in advance of taught sessions
  • Additional support from your tutors (e.g. assistance to catch up on missed work or to check your understanding)
  • Permission to record taught sessions (see Guidance), if not being recorded as standard
  • Extended library book loans, additional reservations, book collection
  • Personal emergency evacuation plans (PEEP)
  • Adjustable / ergonomic furniture in taught sessions

If you've told us you have a disability and provided suitable evidence you may be entitled to adjustments in exams and other assessments.

Any adjustments that you may need will be identified and agreed with your Disability Adviser.

Adjustments can include:

  • Extra time in exams
  • Use of computers with appropriate software
  • Use of a scribe (someone to write the exam for you while you dictate)
  • Taking exams in a separate room so that you can get up and move around if you are in pain or need to rest in between questions
  • Sometimes, alternative forms of assessment can also be arranged. It is very important that you contact us to discuss your exam needs as early as possible on your course

Please note: Telling us about disability on your application form will not automatically trigger exam adjustments or arrangements. You must contact the Disability Advice to arrange these.

Leeds Beckett Students’ Union has many clubs and societies that students can join, offering social opportunities in a more structured way. You may also find CitySocializer useful if you want to meet new people.

Spectrum is a social group for autistic students. The meetings are informal, and student led, with Kate and Sara from the Disability Advice Team as support. Attendance is flexible, so you can come to every group meeting or only occasionally. You don’t need to book, just turn up! In previous meetings we have played quizzes, games, watched tv/film clips, and we can also arrange for guest speakers to come to the group to talk about common interests. The date and time of Spectrum for academic year 2021-22 will be announced shortly.
