Emily’s passion for teaching was first sparked at college when she undertook a placement in a primary school as part of her health and social care course. As well as her demanding studies Emily regularly travels home to help her mum look after her sister who is living with autism.

"The scholarship means it’s going to be a lot easier to manage every aspect of being a student, not having to worry about money which is impacting my studies."

She says “My sister has autism so that means that to help my mum and give her a break I’m constantly having to travel back and forth between university and my hometown, Durham, which means a lot of travelling and extra costs. I also have to work almost enough full time, just to support myself so the scholarship will help a lot.”

When she graduates Emily wants to specialise as a creative arts coordinator, an area she became interested in during her time at Leeds Beckett and feels can be underrepresented in schools.
