Emily is one of six siblings and is passionate about helping others. She chose to study Social Work after seeing the number of rough sleepers in her local area and wanted to help them. As part of her course she does a lot of volunteering, currently with an elderly persons charity, aiming to prevent social isolation.

"Being awarded this scholarship means I’ve been given the opportunity to succeed. It’s almost like someone saying ‘you’re doing alright, you can do this keep going.’ I’m very grateful I was given the opportunity."

Emily says: “Social work for me is literally about helping people, that’s what I’ve always wanted to do. I see a lot of vulnerable people and I wanted to make an impact, obviously I can’t change the world, but I can change someone’s world.”

After graduating Emily wants to work with refugees and asylum seekers, recognising that Yorkshire is an area of high multiculturalism and wants to break down the stigma generated by the media around asylum seekers and refugees.
