Lauren Clarkson - BSc (Hons) Counselling & Mental Health

I chose to study Counselling and Mental Health because I have always wanted to help people, in some way, shape or form. It was when I was in college and began studying psychology that I found a real interest in the subject and made the decision that I would like to pursue therapy as a potential career, thus leading to me choosing a course centred around the skills as counsellor would need.

Studying Counselling & Mental Health

“I chose to study Counselling and Mental Health because I have always wanted to help people, in some way, shape or form. It was when I was in college and began studying psychology that I found a real interest in the subject and made the decision that I would like to pursue therapy as a potential career, thus leading to me choosing a course centred around the skills as counsellor would need.

“I am incredibly grateful to be chosen as this year’s scholar. Thanks to the support of the Professor Bligh Scholarship, I will be able to pursue additional academic opportunities which will be beneficial to my development on the course, the development of my skills as a counsellor and my development as a person. I hope that the mentorship will expand my own perspective and help me think about problems in a new way.

“Depending on what I decide to do after graduation, pursuing my goals may require returning to university to do a post-graduate degree. If I am lucky enough, I hope to end up working in either a counselling service, helping those in need with their mental health, or working in the field of forensic psychology. However, I do feel like I’d prefer working in a mental health service first to get a glimpse into the actual experiences of someone working with a wide variety of people and various different mental health issues."
