LEEDS ART GALLERY & NEW WORTLEY POP-UPS

Cultural pop-up designs for two locations.

The Challenge

New Wortley is inner city suburb of Leeds. New Wortley Community Association exists to manage New Wortley Community Centre and provide a range of services to the community. New Wortley has accommodated five previous Live Projects (Case Studies 002, 016, 022, 024 and 027) over a 10 year period. Project Office was also involved in Park Here and Play lll (Case Study 025) in 2017. Approached to provide design work for Park Here and Play lV it was agreed that this time, the project should not be scrapped after its temporary two-week installation outside the art gallery and should be permanently relocated at New Wortley.

The Brief

A cultural space pop-up with two lives. Firstly, in a temporary location outside Leeds Art Gallery themed on art and play. Secondly, as a permanent cultural space in New Wortley.

The Approach

The project included as part of my MArch1 design studio. Students were taught a range of community participation techniques to help them engage with both the art gallery and New Wortley communities. Eight designs were produced for each location. During the project the Covid-19 global pandemic struck. All teaching moved on line. This was challenging for students, as a Live Project requires physical interaction with people. However, students used digital consultation skills developed in their previous project based in Philadelphia. This resulted, for example, in a website being set up for students to collaborate with the two communities.

The project that is/has been delivered by students also helps shape where we go next as a community and how we empower people and raise funds for a wider broad community curriculum which can then offer to broaden minds, horizons and aspirations.

The Impact

Covid-19 had a considerable effect on the working methods. Students explored new ways of working remotely. These new skills and methods will be valuable in future academic and practice situations.

Students: Ayomide Adediran, Krista Atanasova, Gabrielle Beaumont, Kate Hopkins, Carlos Molina Saurith, Wesley Pusey, Lily Street & Roberto Zanini.
