The Human Behavioural Neuroscience Unit (HBNL) is dedicated to advancing research and innovation to understand, promote, and protect brain function throughout the human lifespan.

Under the leadership of Professor Lauren Owen, Dr Zoe Kolokotroni and Dr Kata Pauly-Takacs, the unit specialises in cognitive psychobiological, nutritional and psychopharmacological research. Its mission is to provide an environment that enables the highest standards of scientific inquiry, supported by LBU’s state-of-the-art facilities and resources designed to meet the complex demands of human research.

The HBNL brings together a team with broad expertise in the assessment of psychological health and brain function. The group conducts research to better understand a range of pathological conditions and disorders, including viral encephalitis, substance misuse, disordered eating, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and dementia. The team’s work also goes beyond studying disease and seeks to support mental health and wellbeing across the lifespan by investigating intricate relationships between for e.g. nutrition, stress and environmental challenges. As such much of our work explores cognitive mechanisms and mood responses to a variety of interventions such as; physical activity, herbal extracts, psychoactive components, nutraceuticals, phytochemicals and food supplements.

Funders and collaborators
Collaboration and knowledge exchange are central to HBNL’s approach. The unit has a strong record of successful partnerships with universities and industry across the UK and internationally. Staff members regularly publish in leading academic journals and contribute to book chapters, and their expertise is frequently sought at major national and international conferences. Through this work, HBNL plays a key role in driving forward scientific understanding and practical applications in the field of human behavioural neuroscience.

  1. Clinical Trial Software – Trialflare

    Trialflare is a platform used for managing clinical research. It integrates CTMS, ePRO, eCRF, eTMF and eConsent into a single compliant platform. Trialflare supports multi-site studies and real-time data collection from wearables and mobile devices. Trial flare offers enhanced automation to improve engagement, efficiency and integrity.

  2. Online survey tools

    We utilise multiple online survey platforms that enable the creation, administration, and analysis of research projects, both in-person and remotely, supporting a wide range of academic and institutional research needs.

  3. Cognitive testing suites

    Numerous standardized cognitive tests and suites with normative data pools for comparison and bespoke tailoring of cognitive assessments as required.

  4. Standardised assessments and measures

    We have a wide range of standardised assessments and measures. These can be used to measure cognition, development and behaviour across the lifespan.

  1. Trans direct current stimulation

    Passes weak electrical current through brain modulating cognitive and motor skills

  2. BioPac MP36R

    Research grade Biopac, used for a variety of different biophysiological measurements including: ECG, GSR, Resp Rate, EOG. 4 channel system that provides multi-measure tracking simultaneously. Analysis through Acqknowledge systems.

  3. Biosemi active EEG system (64 channel)

    • 10-20 electrode placement system - standardized locations on the scalp
    • Data usually sampled at 512Hz
  4. Tobii Pro Eyetracker

    Our Tobii Pro eye-tracking system enables precise measurement of visual attention and gaze behaviour in real time. It has been used in studies exploring attentional bias to drug cues in substance use, allowing researchers to capture subtle patterns in visual processing and attentional control.

  5. Shimmer

    Shimmer sensors are wearable devices that record high-quality physiological data, including electrodermal activity (EDA), heart rate and movement. They are used to investigate psychophysiological response such as stress arousal, and emotional reactivity both in laboratory and naturalistic settings.

  1. Phlebotomy lab

    Allowing for blood draws for an array of peripheral biomarkers (hormones, neurotransmitters, cytokines etc) as well as various biomarkers of drug exposure.
