Cyber security

  1. Passwords

    Passwords should be:

    • Unique – every password should be unique for every account. Your Leeds Beckett password shouldn’t be the same as one used for another account
    • Complex – aim for 12 character passwords with random, letters, numbers and special characters. Don’t use your birthday or pet’s name!
    • Secret – passwords shouldn’t be shared or written down
  2. Protect your identity

    • Ask why – when an app or website asks for your personal data ask yourself why they need it and if you’re comfortable with them having your details
    • Account sharing – it’s a nice gesture to share your subscription service details with friends but it can be risky
    • Wi-Fi networks – open Wi-Fi networks should only be used for basic internet searches. Never log into your banking etc or your details could be stolen
  3. Protect your device

    • Lock it up – devices should have passwords or passcodes. If someone finds or steals your device they shouldn’t be able to access your data
    • Up to date – keeping devices and anti-virus programmes up to date helps combat cyber security threats
    • Cloud storage – keep your data safe and secure by using password-protected cloud storage. You get 1TB free on OneDrive
  4. Phishing

    • Something fishy – received an odd email from someone you know? Look out for poor spelling, different tone, time they sent it etc. If you’re not sure check with them to see if they did send it
    • Stay vigilant – phishing emails and texts are more and more convincing. Always question why you’re being asked to do something, especially if you’re not expecting the request
