Preparing for competition in the heat
Limit the impact of heat on your performance and health.
Exercising in the heat creates an additional stress on the body and brings multiple challenges ranging from reduced performance to severe cases of heat stroke. The severity of the impact will depend on many factors such as the temperature and humidity, the exercise intensity, and also how well prepared the athlete is.
Our experienced team can help to reduce the impact of the heat and put in place interventions and support to optimise performance and physical capabilities. We can advise on what is best for the planned events using a combination of our services. Some examples of how we can help are:
- Creating bespoke heat acclimation interventions to suit the exact requirements of the event
- Provide opportunities to experience the expected conditions of the event in our environmental chambers
- Provide a personalised nutrition and hydration plan to ensure that fatigue and dehydration are minimised
- Identify suitable pacing strategies and opportunities to enhance fitness prior to the event
- Carry out cardiac screening to ensure that you reduce the (extremely small) risk of sudden cardiac death during exercise
Please see below for details of the relevant services that will help you perform optimally in the heat.

I took part in what is described as the hottest ever marathon des sables. I have no doubt in my mind that the acclimatisation training I did at LBU prepared me greatly for the event. I can honestly say that the heat did not seem a major factor for me, which is crazy considering the amount of people who dropped out due to it. The team were so accommodating and flexible, everything was professionally done and with the utmost care. I wouldn’t even consider taking on this event again without the support of the team at LBU.
