Is My Landlord Up To Code?

If next year’s house is Code accredited, Unipol can support you with any problems you might have while living there, including problems with your landlord.

You can check if your new house is Code accredited by using the handy Code Checker Tool on their website.

If you haven’t yet signed for next year’s house, it is highly recommended that you sign with a Code accredited landlord to give you extra peace of mind.

Looking to Stay Again?

How Do I Get My Keys?

Check with your new landlord if they have everything they need; Has everyone provided their guarantor information? Has everyone paid their deposit? And check if you need to book your key collection slot.

You will need your ID in order to collect your key, so keep it handy. Don’t pack it into the bottom of a box!

How Do I Ensure Shared Bills Are Paid On Time?

Check whether your utility bills are included with the rent in your new contract. If they’re not, you and your housemates will need to arrange this yourselves. Do some research using an online comparison site to get the best deal and register with the relevant utility companies. If possible, register everyone in the house so that no one has to take individual responsibility.

Make sure you all know when payments are to be made – the easiest way to do it is to set up a direct debit so you don’t need to remember to pay it each month.

Do I Need Insurance?

Check whether personal possessions insurance is included in your new contract. Your insurance was included in your rent this year, but many landlords do not include this. Consider whether you need to buy this separately to cover any of your high value items.

Before doing this, you could check your parents' home insurance policy, as you may automatically be covered against theft or loss under its 'temporarily removed from the home' section while you're a student. You can find more info and advice on this on the UCAS website.
