Studying Biomedical Science

Women becoming scientists, doctors, nurses, etc. should all be encouraged. I am a mature student and the first person in my family to attend university. I have and am still working as a clinical support worker at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust while continuing my studies. So, being able to understand how samples are processed is vitally important in diagnosing and treating patients.

How will the Soroptimist International of Leeds Scholarship help?

I know how worrying the financial aspect of returning to higher education is. As well as it being very daunting to be surrounded by students who are straight from sixth form or college. I personally found it challenging to start with, settling in, as unlike nursing there are very few mature students undertaking Biomedical Science. The lecturers have helped to ease my worries and are very approachable and understanding. I love the course and feel that I have already learned so much that will help me go forward to years two and three and into my career.

Soroptimists International do an amazing job working to empower women and girls around the world and encouraging them into education. When I have obtained my degree, I hope to be able to encourage more women and girls into education and STEM subjects.
