"My husband and I attended the open day for my course, and I decided to apply because the welcome we got was just amazing. I felt so accepted as a mature student and couldn't wait to start my studies at Leeds Beckett. After this, I needed little persuading in applying as I just knew how supported I would be on my student journey and university experience."

Studying Social Work

My priority in life has always been my children, and so I questioned how my decision to study would impact upon them. I want to be a good role model for my children and prove to myself I can achieve something great and make a difference in the process. I struggled at school when I was younger and so I felt very apprehensive about putting myself out there in a much younger, student community.

My husband and I attended the open day for my course, and I decided to apply because the welcome we got was just amazing. I felt so accepted as a mature student and couldn't wait to start my studies at Leeds Beckett.

With the support available and the quality of the course, I realised how much I really wanted to be a social worker. It was really a lightbulb moment! After this, I needed little persuading in applying as I just knew how supported I would be on my student journey and university experience.

How will the Bright Futures Scholarship help?

I’m coming towards the end of my first semester and my tutors have been so supportive and encouraged me to question everything and to achieve to the best of my ability. I see myself working in a community setting doing social work and I want to be able to empower others and be positive role model. The Bright Futures Scholarship will help to take away some of the financial pressures at home and allow me to make the most of my course so I can buy textbooks and complete work experience placements.
