Studying Human Geography and Planning

My mum always pushed me to go to university, but for a long time I didn't want to. Coming from not a great area, it felt like just another roadblock for me to tackle in order to be able to access new opportunities. But then I learned about urban planning and human geography I fell in love with these fields.

The concept of making our living environments better for us is something very alluring to me, I don't want more people to have to grow up in areas that are anti-pedestrian. Not only do urban planning and human geography help you understand the different people you might meet and their experiences, it also helps you to understand the wider world much better.

In the future, my dream is to be a fully accredited urban planner working in transport planning. Transport planning would let me fulfil my dream of making sure all of us are in environments that are accessible for everyone. Right now, our environment only really works for people who drive, which means the young and elderly are forced to rely on our outdated public transport. This isn't good for our towns and cities and only increases urban and rural poverty.

I'm really interested in the need to modernise our public transport, and it's something that I would like to specialise in after university. I see myself ideally working for a local authority and making meaningful changes to communities needing help.
