Animations & Interaction

  • The Leeds Beckett University website occasionally uses animations to page elements and animated gifs to add impact to pages. If you wish to stop them from playing for accessibility purposes or for personal preference then please see the guidance below. Please note that browsers sometimes change how they operate, so please refer to your browser help files to find their latest information.

  • How do I turn off animations?
    Chrome

    Chrome users will need to use browser extensions. Animation Policy from Google will help you set your own preferences.

    Microsoft Edge

    There is currently no way to disable animations within Microsoft Edge. Users of Edge (Chromium) browser can install the Chrome extensions above and use them.

    Internet Explorer

    To stop animations on a single page you can just press the 'Esc' key. This will stop the animation on that page. If you wish to restart the animations you need to refresh the page. To permanently disable the playing of animated GIF images, open Internet Options > Advanced tab. Under the Multimedia section, uncheck the Play animations in webpage check-box, click Apply and Exit and then restart your computer.

    Firefox

    Type about:config in Firefox address bar and hit Enter to open Settings. Search for the image.animation_mode flag and change its value from Normal to None. Once you restart Firefox this will disable animations.

Paddle Discover

This course takes you on the next steps towards becoming an independent paddler, for a fun and safe time on the water. 

The Paddle Discover Award accredited by British Canoeing is the second award in the series and follows on from the Paddle Start Award. 

This Award will enable you to develop an understanding of the factors which affect your paddling; develop your decision making and practical skills, and give you confidence on the water.

Coaching is provided by our expert team and we provide all the equipment needed for the session; canoes/kayaks, paddles, buoyancy aids, wetsuits, cags and helmets.

Course information

This Discover Award course allows you to develop your decision making and practical skills for a fun and safe time on the water, taking you on the next steps towards becoming a proficient and independent paddler. Learn how to choose and effectively use equipment, whilst developing an understanding of the factors which affect your paddling; giving you the confidence to progress to making your own choices with the Explore Award.

This course will develop those skills introduced during the Paddle Start Award and will begin to develop those skills required to become an independent paddler, this course will cover topics such as:

  • Clothing and equipment - personal and group
  • Efficient movement of your boat including forwards, backwards and manoeuvring 
  • Venue choice - including access, egress, weather conditions
  • Awareness of hazards
  • Introduction to rescues and emergency procedures

Coaching is provided by our expert team and we provide all the equipment needed for the courses; canoes/kayaks/stand up paddle boards, paddles, buoyancy aids, wetsuits, cags and helmets. You are also welcome to bring your own equipment if you wish.

One day

  • We run this course as a full day session from 09:00 to 17:30

There are no formal pre-requisites required to attend this course, however most attendees will have already completed our Paddle Start Award. 

This course can take place on any flat, sheltered water environment including canals, lakes, rivers, or reservoirs, subject to appropriate permission.

Through our affiliation with British Canoeing and our partnership with the Canal and River Trust we have access to over 3000km of canals throughout England and Wales including the famous Leeds to Liverpool canal stretching 204km across the North of England. This access not only gives us the opportunity to journey along some of these magnificent waterways but also provides opportunities for courses in beautiful sheltered areas.

Most of the large bodies of open water in England are concentrated in the Lake District National Park. These magnificent bodies of water, including the longest and deepest lakes in England, Lake Windermere at 17km long and Wastwater at 74m deep, can be accessed by the public at many locations, however, through our partnership with the Youth Hostel Association we have preferential access to some of the best locations in the lakes. You could even combine any of our courses with a stay at one of 150 YHA hostels spread across England and Wales.
