Professional Practice Learning Requirements

Welcome to Leeds Beckett University

Once you have completed the pre-enrolment requirements, your ability to attend the placement components of the course are dependent on the completion of professional practice learning requirements prior to your first placement.

It is vital that you undertake all of these placement requirements relevant to your course, in addition to pre-enrolment checks, as failure to complete these processes within the specified timescale, will mean that you will not be allocated a placement.

Please use the checklist below as a tool to navigate your way through all of the requirements for placement.

Please contact the practice learning team if you have any questions, call: 0113 812 6278 / 0113 812 4525 or email: hssfitforpractice@leedsbeckett.ac.uk

Students are required to have an initial health validation appointment to be cleared as fit for placement for the following courses:

  • Adult Health Nursing
  • Mental Health Nursing
  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Dietetics
  • Speech and Language Therapy

Please make sure that you bring to your appointment:

  • Immunisation history, which can be obtained from your GP, with you to this appointment
  • Photo ID
  • Face masks, which must be worn during your appointment

Please ensure you arrive at your appointment on time.

The University occupational health provider will immunise students if they cannot provide evidence that they have previously received the following vaccinations:

  • MMR – 2 immunisation appointments
  • Varicella (Chickenpox) – 2 immunisation appointments
  • Hep B – 3 immunisations and a blood test

Additional testing may be required dependant on your health questionnaire responses.

You will receive email and text message to the details you have provided on your health questionnaire, with details of your first appointment. You will be required to update your contact details so all subsequent appointment confirmations will be sent to your updated student email address.

Attending Occupational Health is compulsory and a requirement of the course to ensure your and patient safety on placement. You will be automatically charged a non-attendance fine by the external Occupational Health Provider if you fail to attend any appointment.

Each year Health and Social Care students are required to attend/undertake annual mandatory training to ensure you are safe and prepared for the practice environment.

All School of Health and AHP students are required to complete mandatory training modules before going on placement. Leeds Beckett University use the term Mandatory Training as a ‘catch all’ to cover both mandatory and statutory training. Leeds Beckett University uses a combination of practice and online resources to ensure that students have completed Mandatory Training.

Online training platform is provided via the University. You will receive an email with a link to the training and your login in details in the first few weeks of the course.

There will be a definitive deadline date for completion of all Mandatory Training to ensure all mandatory and statutory requirements have been completed by student in time to start placement. Failure to complete the training will mean that you will be unable to receive details of and attend placement.

Please also refer to Leeds Beckett Fitness to Practise Policy.

As part of your induction onto the Health Care courses at Leeds Beckett University you will need to pre-order a uniform from our external Uniform Supplier

Further instructions, sizing guides and an online questionnaire will be sent to you to complete. You may be invited to an online Uniform Q&A session as part of your induction session to allow for any queries. You will be invited to complete the questionnaire as part of this session.

There will be a definitive closing date to ensure delivery of Uniform is on time for placement. Failure to complete the questionnaire will mean that your uniform will not arrive in time for your placement.

All Health and Social Care Practice Learning students must comply with the placement provider's guidelines on the dress codes and/or wearing of uniforms.

If a student needs to replace a uniform that they have damaged or lost or need a resize, they may order additional items of uniform from the contractor’s online store.

Please email the Fit for Practice Team to request additional uniform.

You will be issued with an NHS Smartcard prior to placement if required; this is a plastic card containing an electronic chip (like a chip and PIN credit card) that is used to access NHS systems for updating patient records while on placement.

This is an external process provided NHS Logistics Team via Leeds Beckett University. NHS Logistic Team will arrange a Smartcard online application which students will be required to complete promptly with appropriate forms of ID to verify their personal details. Smartcards will then be distributed via the Practice Learning Team.

Smartcards are issued locked, students need to see a smartcard sponsor at their placement who can unlock the card, this allows the student to then set their password which remains on the card forever, therefore it needs to be memorable as you are asked for the password every time you use it.

Lost/stolen cards should be reported immediately to the Registration Authority at registration.authority@this.nhs.co.uk; you may be charged for a replacement.

For further information regarding the ID checks, please visit the NHS Employer Identity Checks website.
