top 10 reasons to join a sports team

There are so many great reasons to join a sports team at Leeds Beckett University.

Your time in one of our teams will help to shape your student experience and will give you memories and friends for years to come. Here are our top 10 reasons to join a sports team:

  1. 01 - Train around your studies

Being part of a university team makes it easy to fit your training around your degree, with teams running training sessions before and after the university day. Plus, we keep Wednesday afternoons free in your timetable to allow you to represent your team competitively.

02 - Get fit

Not only will being involved in a team help you get fit, but you’ll also be so busy having a good time that you might not even notice!

  1. 03 - Meet new people (that you might not have met otherwise)

One of the biggest perks of being on a team is the comradery, being part of a close-knit group that have each other’s backs. You’ll meet lots of people that you might not have otherwise, and the experience might give you some friends for life.

04 - The facilities are great

We have a range of modern facilities that we’re proud to shout about, especially for our sports teams. One of the highlights is the new state-of-the-art £45m Carnegie School of Sport Building, and we also offer memberships to our gyms, which are located on both campuses, so there are no excuses for avoiding that post-lecture workout!

  1. 05 - Learn a new skill or develop an existing one

You might be keen to play a sport that you’re experienced in, in which case you’ll benefit from a community of likeminded people and getting to work with our expert coaches. But if you take up a new sport, you’ll find yourself leaving university with an entirely new skill that you didn’t have before, so make sure to keep an open mind when deciding what sport is for you.

  2. 06 - Transferable skills of teamwork

Not only will you have skills that will make you stand out on the pitch (or in the pool / at competitions), but your sports experience will also make you stand out to employers. Playing a sport allows you to develop lots of really valuable transferrable skills, including teamwork, motivation, commitment and handling pressure.

  3. 07 - A sense of community

It doesn’t matter who you are or what your background is, playing a sport in our Athletics Union will put you in the middle of a vibrant and supportive sports community.

08 - That matchday buzz

Nothing quite compares to the buzz of putting in a great performance for your team. But as much as our teams strive to be their best selves when competing, there is so much more to a matchday than just the match. For example, if you’re playing in a BUCS League then chances are, you’ll have the opportunity to travel to different destinations in the UK – who doesn’t love a road trip?

Speaking of matchday buzz, you really can’t beat the excitement that takes over during Varsity! Varsity is a two-day event packed with sports actions, where over 60 Leeds Beckett sports teams compete against University of Leeds, culminating in the traditional Rugby finale at Headingley Stadium.

  1. 09 - Build your confidence

Playing for a team is a great way to nurture and grow your confidence. Setting yourself regular goals and putting in the hard work to meet them will make you feel on top of the world and be more confident, not only as an athlete, but in day-to-day life.
