Welcome to the Carnegie School of Sport Research Community
"Our postgraduate research students are an integral part of the Carnegie School of Sport. We have a thriving postgraduate research student community who produce high quality research with real world impact. As well as completing a research degree, we pride ourselves in supporting postgraduate research students to develop skills that will enable them to pursue a successful career in academia or the sports industry more widely. By joining the Carnegie School of Sport you will become part of a buoyant and internationally renowned research community"
Dr Hayley Fitzgerald, Director of Postgraduate Research Students, Carnegie School of Sport
Are you keen to develop your knowledge, understanding and passion for sport, exercise and physical activity? A research degree can help you to do just that.
It will give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in a specific field of study and develop your expertise under supervision. This support will help you to undertake highly developed research that will contribute new insight to the field and a research degree can set you apart from others when it comes to your career.
The Carnegie School of Sport is an increasingly attractive destination for those wanting to work on projects of real-world significance that are co-produced with practitioners, industry experts and policy-makers in the world of sport and physical activity. The School prides itself on its high level of applied research activity and thriving community of over 100 research students working alongside academics with a range of cutting-edge specialisms. Our academics are globally recognised for their research on doping prevention, weight management, sport coaching effectiveness and professional practice, physical activity promotion and equity and difference in PE and sport. In addition, new areas of research strength are emerging including rugby science, performance in extreme environments and healthy ageing.
The School is proud of its heritage built from the prestigious Carnegie College of Physical Education. Our history links us to decades of producing successful graduates who are now leaders across national and international sport bringing a wealth of expertise that feeds directly into our teaching. With over 80 years’ experience, we are experts in Sport Education.
Our staff make a significant contribution to the field of Sport, Exercise Science, Leisure and Tourism in the UK and beyond, as evidenced in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF2014). Sustained research activity since REF 2014 demonstrates that we have added to that momentum. Our academics want to advance understanding of complex phenomena and provide students with access to the latest thinking in their field. This is underpinned by our mission to make a positive and decisive difference to people, communities, organisations in sport and exercise contexts. Our strategy focuses attention around our research strengths. For example, we have recently established a Centre for Applied Obesity Research to provide a focal point for our interdisciplinary research in this area.
Underpinning our success is the inclusive and collaborative ethos that runs through our research student community. This community is vibrant and supportive and attracts exceptional students. We are passionate about providing them with every opportunity to achieve their full potential by working alongside internationally recognised and renowned experts and research groups. Collaboration with external national and international partner institutions is also a key feature of our research. This underpins the importance we place on knowledge exchange, through our carnegieXchange programme.
Our academic staff can help prospective students develop their research proposals as part of the application process. We are happy for prospective research students to visit the School to see the facilities and to meet academic staff and research students.
