Research that makes a difference

Our research degrees are for people that want to solve problems. People who listen, and collaborate. People who aren't afraid to think differently, and cross disciplines.

Every day, we work on real-world issues, with industry and academic partners from all walks of life. With more than 200 research students working in a range of fields, you'll be part of a community that's changing society through sport.

Postgraduate research students are an essential part of the Carnegie School of Sport, helping make a positive difference to people, organisations and communities. We offer access to first class facilities, a vibrant research community and the opportunity to engage in high quality research with real world impact.

Doctor of Professional Practice in Sport (DProf Sport)

The DProf Sport integrates part-time doctoral level study with continuing professional practice. It's therefore ideal for those who wish to study at doctoral level whilst maintaining their professional commitments. The programme aims to support experienced professionals working within sport to develop evidence-led solutions to their ‘real world’ workplace problems and gain a formal qualification at the same time.

  1. Masters by Research (MRes)

Are you looking to take your first steps into a research career? The MRes is a stepping stone between undergraduate and PhD-level research, and is a good starting point for someone looking to explore a new subject area, or different academic research options.

    It's typically a one-year full-time degree, or two years part-time.
  2. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

If you choose to complete a PhD programme, you'll spend your time researching a topic that contributes new knowledge to your field. You'll be trained in research skills which will be valuable in many different careers. You'll be assessed with an oral exam called a "viva voce", and you'll be asked to present your research in a thesis of up to 100,000 words.

A PhD can take four years full-time, or six years part-time.

State-of-the-art facilities

As part of our research community you'll have access to our inspirational learning and research environments - including performance spaces and labs - giving you all you need to discover your potential.

Once you have decided which programme would be suitable for you we recommend getting in touch to discuss your idea with an Academic Supervisor.

You can use our Find an Academic Supervisor tool or browse our research centre pages below to find relevant academic colleagues to talk with.

When you've found a supervisor you're happy to work with, then you can submit your application to The Graduate School.
