Care EXPERIENCED and estranged students
At Leeds Beckett we are committed to supporting students who are care experienced or estranged from their families. We want you to get the best out of your course, fulfil your potential and enjoy your university experience.
Please have a look through the information on this page, it tells you more about the support and opportunities available to you before you arrive and during your time with us.
Who can we support?
Care experienced
A care experienced young person aged 16-25 years old who has spent time living in the care system, away from family. This can be at any stage of their life, no matter how short. This also includes adopted children who were previously looked after.
Estranged students
Estranged students are young people studying without the support and approval of a family network. Young people in this position often have no contact at all with their family and have removed themselves from a dysfunctional situation. This also includes students whose parents have died or where your parents can't be traced or it isn't practicable or safe for you to make contact with them.
Kinship care
Students who have experienced kinship care are those who have lived with other family members as their parents were unable to care for them. We can support those whose kinship care has been formally recognised and supported by the local authority.
Foyer residents
If you are under 25 and currently live in a Foyer or have left in the last 12 months and are now living independently, then we can offer you further support.
Dedicated Contact
Care-experienced and estranged applicants and students at Leeds Beckett have a dedicated point of contact within the Student Life team. Support is available from initial enquiry and enrolment through to graduation, helping to ensure students feel supported throughout their time at university.
This includes answering questions, offering guidance and helping students access the wide range of support available across the University, such as financial support (including bursaries and funding), accommodation options, and wider wellbeing and practical support. The aim is to provide a consistent, supportive point of contact so you don’t have to navigate things alone.
If you have disclosed on your UCAS application that you are care-experienced or estranged, the Student Life team will be in touch directly to introduce the support available. However, you are always welcome to get in touch at any time if you have any questions or concerns about university life, even if you did not share your circumstances on your application.
